Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Crown

The marble floors of the Sterling estate were always cold, but today they felt like blocks of ice against Valeria’s knees. Water, bitter and heavy with disdain, cascaded down her slicked-back hair, soaking the stiff cotton collar of her black-and-white maid uniform. Above her, Isabella stood in her immaculate gold satin gown, a masterpiece of silk that seemed to mock the wretchedness below. Isabella’s hand tilted the silver pitcher just slightly more, letting the last drops splatter cruelly against Valeria’s bowed head.

""Know your place, maid,"" Isabella’s voice chimed, smooth as glass and just as sharp.

Valeria didn't dare lift her gaze. Her vision swam with a mixture of salt, tears, and absolute humiliation. Bright yellow rubber gloves—the universal badge of her servitude—trembled as she clutched a single, rusted object against her chest like a lifeline. It was an antique bronze skeleton key, heavy and cold, the only inheritance left by her mother before the world had collapsed around her. Every fiber of her body ached from hours of kneeling, yet the physical pain was nothing compared to the suffocating terror gripping her lungs. Her five-year-old daughter, Lily, was locked away somewhere in the sprawling labyrinth of the estate's subterranean quarters, completely at the mercy of a household that viewed human life as disposable currency.

The heavy double doors at the far end of the grand foyer suddenly groaned open. The sharp click of heavy boots echoed against the vaulted ceiling, cutting through the stifling silence of the room. A shadow fell over the polished floor, long and imposing.

""What is going on here?""

The voice was a low, dangerous rumble that commanded the very air to freeze. Lorenzo. The master of the house, a man whose sheer presence could turn a room to ash. Valeria’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. She raised her tear-stained, desperate eyes toward the doorway, clutching the antique key upward as if it were a shield against execution.
