Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Shut

A mechanical whine pierced the silence, followed by the heavy thud of pneumatic bolts sliding into place behind them. The stairwell exit they had just descended was sealing itself shut with impenetrable sheets of reinforced steel.
""No, no, no!"" Valeria screamed, throwing herself against the closing door of the archive room, beating her fists bloody against the unyielding wood. ""Lily! Open the door!""
Lorenzo wrenched the bronze key, but the internal gears of the lock ground to a halt, jammed by an automated security protocol override. The trap wasn't set by some ancient mechanism—it was a modern digital lockdown, triggered remotely from the main house. Isabella had played her final card, burying them alive to protect the secrets of the Sterling dynasty.
""Step back,"" Lorenzo ordered, his voice laced with absolute fury. He drew his pistol, aiming squarely at the reinforced electronic lock panel beside the door. Without a second thought, he fired three deafening shots into the machinery. Sparks showered down like a cascade of dying stars, illuminating the narrow corridor in harsh, stuttering bursts. The sparks illuminated a faint engraving on the stone wall just above the doorframe—a crest that belonged not to the Sterlings, but to Valeria’s forgotten family line.
Valeria collapsed against Lorenzo’s side, trembling uncontrollably as the smoke cleared, leaving them in near-total darkness save for the dying glow of their flashlight.

""They're going to bury us here,"" she whispered, her voice a hollow shell of despair.
Lorenzo wrapped a strong, protective arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest as he stared up at the jammed ceiling vent, where a faint mechanical hiss signaled the release of something far more lethal than simple darkness: a low, rhythmic pulse of gas began to hiss from the overhead vents.
