Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Vault

The atmosphere in the foyer grew so dense it felt difficult to draw breath. Lorenzo stared down at the bronze key resting in his palm, memories he had buried deep in the graveyard of his youth clawing their way back to the surface. That key hadn't seen the light of day since the night his father died under mysterious circumstances—the same night Valeria’s family was erased from high society.
""Where did you get this?"" Lorenzo whispered, his voice dangerously low, stepping past Isabella as if she were a ghost.
""My mother left it to me before they took her away,"" Valeria sobbed, clutching the fabric of her black skirt. ""She said if I ever found myself drowning in this house, the truth was hidden beneath the chapel floor. But Isabella... Isabella locked Lily down there as leverage. She took my daughter, Lorenzo! You have to help me, please—if we don't go down there right now, we might already be too late.""

Isabella’s face drained of color. The sophisticated mask fractured completely, replaced by a cold, venomous panic. ""Lorenzo, if you take one step toward that chapel, you'll regret it for the rest of your miserable life,"" she hissed, her voice dropping all pretense of elegance. ""Some doors are meant to stay rusted shut.""
Ignoring the warning, Lorenzo grabbed Valeria by the shoulders, hauling her to her feet with fierce urgency. He looked deep into her swollen, hopeful hazel eyes, seeing a ghost of the past staring back at him. Without a backward glance at Isabella, he dragged Valeria toward the eastern corridor, their footsteps echoing like gunshots through the mansion. But as they reached the heavy iron door leading to the subterranean crypts, the keypad lock blinked a sterile, blinking red—and the digital display read: Access Denied: System Purged.
