Chapter 8 - Bloodlines and Betrayal

The fire roared above like a caged beast, its heat radiating through the reinforced concrete walls of the hidden archive. Lorenzo ripped off his suit jacket, using it to beat away the smoldering debris that had blocked the secondary ventilation shaft. His knuckles were raw and bleeding, yet he refused to stop.

Valeria clutched Lily tight against her chest, shielding the little girl from the falling ash. The digital monitors on the wall flickered and died one by one as the mainframe caught fire, plunging the room into a suffocating, amber-lit gloom. Only one screen remained active—a local loop playing a pre-recorded audio file left by Isabella.

“If you’re watching this, Lorenzo, you dug too deep,” Isabella’s recorded voice echoed mockingly through the dying speakers. “Your father knew the truth about Valeria’s family. He didn't die of a heart attack; he was murdered to secure our fortune. And now, you’ll share his exact fate.”

Valeria looked up at Lorenzo, her eyes wide with a mixture of horror and realization. ""Your father... my parents... it was all the same night.""

""Yes,"" Lorenzo growled, his shoulder slamming into the metal grate of the ventilation shaft until the hinges finally screamed and snapped. He turned back, his face streaked with soot and sweat, his dark eyes burning with a terrifying, cold fury. ""And the man who pulled the trigger is standing right above us.""

With a final, explosive kick, Lorenzo shattered the ventilation grate, opening a dark, narrow escape route leading upward into the heart of the burning mansion. He reached down, grabbing Valeria by the arm and hauling her and the child up into the crawlspace just as the floor beneath them collapsed into a roaring inferno.
