Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Machine

The screens flickered, casting an eerie blue glow over Valeria, who was rocking a half-conscious Lily against her chest. Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed as he watched the masked figure on the monitor navigate the labyrinthine hallways of the estate with terrifying familiarity. Nobody moved through the Sterling security grid like that unless they had master administrative codes—codes that only the head of the family, or someone with absolute legal control, possessed.
""Who is that?"" Valeria whispered, her voice hoarse from the gas as she shielded Lily's face.
""Someone who wants us erased before morning,"" Lorenzo replied grimly, stepping up to the central console. His fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing firewalls with the ruthless efficiency of a man who had built his own empire from the ruins of others. ""Isabella didn't act alone. She's just a puppet for whoever holds the corporate trust.""
A file flashed onto the screen, encrypted with a password that required a biometric scan. Lorenzo didn't hesitate; he pressed his thumb against the glass scanner built into the console’s interface. Access Granted: Welcome, Director Sterling.

Valeria stared at him in stunned disbelief through the smoke and shadows. ""Director... Sterling? You're not just a partner in the firm. You own the entire estate.""
Before Lorenzo could answer, a violent explosion rocked the foundation of the mansion above them. Dust and pulverized concrete rained down from the ceiling, burying the doorway in a thick wall of rubble. The air in the hidden room grew instantly hot, the oxygen rapidly depleting as the fire above consumed the lower levels. They were completely cut off, trapped in a concrete tomb with the very ghosts they had tried to outrun.
