Chapter 6 - Oxygen and Lies

The sweet, sickly scent of chemical vapor filled the confined space within seconds. Lorenzo immediately tore the silk pocket square from his suit jacket, pressing it urgently against Valeria’s nose and mouth.
""Breathe through this,"" he commanded, his own breathing growing shallow as the sedative began to thin the air. ""Don't let it settle in your lungs, Valeria. Look at me. Keep your eyes on me.""
Valeria’s eyelids fluttered, heavy with exhaustion and the encroaching poison. Through the haze of the thickening smoke, the archive door suddenly clicked—not from the key, but from a manual override switch hidden behind the stone crest on the wall. The heavy wooden panel drifted inward, revealing a pitch-black interior. From the darkness, a tiny, trembling pair of arms wrapped around Valeria’s ankles.
""Mommy...?"" a small voice whimpered.
""Lily!"" Valeria gasped, throwing off Lorenzo's arm and crawling desperately into the dark room, scooping her daughter into her arms in a fierce, unbreakable embrace.

Lorenzo followed them in, sweeping the flashlight beam across the hidden chamber. What he saw made his blood run cold. The room wasn't an archive of old deeds; it was a modern surveillance hub, its banks of computer monitors glowing softly in the dark, displaying live feeds of every room in the mansion—including Isabella’s private study, where a man was currently standing over a safe, burning documents bearing the Sterling family crest.
And on the central monitor, a live video feed showed a masked figure walking calmly toward the basement stairwell, carrying a heavy iron canister marked with a biohazard warning symbol.
