Chapter 4 - Echoes Beneath the Floorboards

The acrid smell of ozone and damp earth greeted them the moment Lorenzo forced the heavy iron door off its hydraulic hinges with a brutal heave of his shoulder. The stairwell plunging into the darkness of the chapel crypt was lit only by the flickering emergency lights overhead, casting long, writhing shadows against the stone walls.

Valeria didn't hesitate. She descended first, her rubber-gloved hands gripping the damp stone railing, guided entirely by a mother’s primal instinct. ""Lily!"" she called out into the echoing void, her voice breaking into a ragged sob. ""Lily, can you hear Mommy?""

No answer came back, save for the steady, maddening drip of water somewhere in the deep recesses of the subterranean chambers. Lorenzo followed closely behind, a heavy steel flashlight cutting through the gloom, his other hand instinctively reaching for the concealed firearm beneath his suit jacket. Every instinct he possessed—honed through years of ruthless corporate warfare and street-level survival—screamed that they were walking into a trap. Yet, the sight of Valeria’s absolute desperation short-circuited his usual caution.

They reached the lower landing, where a heavy oak door marked the entrance to the family archives. The antique bronze key felt heavy in Lorenzo’s pocket, a useless relic if the electronic override had already locked them out from the inside. But as Valeria pressed her ear against the splintered wood of the door, a faint, rhythmic sound drifted through the cracks—a small, terrified gasp, followed by the muffled hum of a child trying to stifle her cries.

""She's in there,"" Valeria whispered, turning to Lorenzo with eyes wide with terror. ""They locked her in the dark. Lorenzo, open it. Use the key—use the key!""

Lorenzo stepped forward, sliding the bronze skeleton key into the antiquated iron lock. It fit with a chilling, seamless precision. But just as he turned the mechanism, the heavy steel walls around them began to shudder, and the emergency lights flashed from red to a blinding, lethal amber.
