Chapter 10 - Sacrificial Grounds

The sound of the shot echoed off the corrugated metal walls of the weigh-station, sharp and absolute.

For a terrifying second, Elena’s heart stopped. She expected to see Titan collapse, to watch the noble hound slip away into the dark just as he had supposedly done twelve years ago.

Instead, Cassian Moreau’s eyes rolled back into his head. The small pistol dropped from his limp fingers into the churning mud.

Behind him stood Julian Vance, smoke drifting lazily from the barrel of his rifle. His expression was chiseled from stone, his eyes devoid of mercy. Julian lowered the weapon, stepping over the fallen syndicate leader without a second glance, kicking the dropped pistol into the water.

Titan released his grip on Cassian's arm, panting heavily, his flanks heaving. The dog turned slowly toward Elena, whining softly, and nudged his wet snout against her trembling hands. She threw her arms around his thick neck, sobbing into his rain-soaked coat, feeling the strong, steady thump of his heartbeat against her chest.

"He's okay," Julian said gently, kneeling beside her and resting a firm, reassuring hand on her shoulder. "He's okay, Elena. It's over."

Across the yard, Arthur Sterling stumbled through the debris, using a rusted support beam to pull himself upright. His wrists were still bound, his face bloody and swollen, but as he looked at his daughter, tears cut clear tracks through the grime on his cheeks.

"Elena..." Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with twelve years of suppressed agony.

Elena let go of Titan and scrambled to her feet, running through the mud toward the man she had mourned for over a decade. She threw her arms around him, burying her face into his chest just as she had when she was a little girl. Arthur pressed his bruised forehead against hers, weeping openly, the tight zip-ties digging into his skin as he tried to wrap his bound arms around her.

Julian stepped forward, pulling a combat knife from his belt and slicing the plastic bindings with a single, clean stroke.

Arthur’s hands were instantly free. He cupped his daughter’s face in his calloused, trembling palms, inspecting every inch of her features. "Look at you... you're so grown up. You have her eyes, Elena. God forgive me, I stayed away to keep you safe, but all I did was leave you alone."

"You came back," Elena choked out, holding onto his wrists as if he might vanish into mist if she let go. "Titan brought you back."

Titan padded over, nudging his massive head between their intertwined hands, letting out a deep, contented rumble. Arthur buried his hand in the dog's fur, tracing the familiar scar beneath his eye.

"Good boy," Arthur whispered thickly. "You protected her. Just like you promised."

Marcus approached from the perimeter, lowering his weapon. "Sir, we have two minutes before local authorities track the gunfire. We need to move."

Julian looked down at Cassian's lifeless body, then at the titanium cylinder still clutched safely in Elena’s hand.

"We don't run from the authorities this time," Julian said, his voice reclaiming its commanding corporate authority. "We call them. We hand them the encryption key. By dawn, Interpol will be executing search warrants on every Vanguard estate from London to Zurich."

Arthur looked at Julian, a quiet, profound understanding passing between the two old friends. "It’s finally over, Julian."

"Almost," Julian replied, glancing toward the southern horizon where the lights of the port city began to pierce the dissipating storm clouds. "We still have to bring the Sterling name home."
