Chapter 13 - The Siege of Valetta

The concussive shockwave of the blast blew out the decorative stained glass above the foyer, raining colored shards across the marble floor. Titan barked furiously, throwing his massive body against the terrace doors, demanding to enter the fray.

"Get down!" Julian roared, drawing his weapon as he sprinted back to the terrace, grabbing Elena and Arthur by their shoulders, forcing them against the thick limestone wall.

Black smoke billowed from the front driveway. Through the dust, two armored tactical vans screeched to a halt in the courtyard. The side doors flew open, and eight men wearing tactical gear and gas masks poured out, wielding automatic rifles with military discipline. These were not corporate mercenaries like Cassian's thugs; their movements were silent, synchronized, and deadly.

"Gregory didn't come to negotiate," Arthur shouted over the rising gunfire as rounds pulverized the villa’s exterior facade. "He brought a kill squad!"

"The harbor!" Julian ordered, pulling two spare magazines from his belt and slapping one into his sidearm. "There's a private launch moored at the base of the cliff. The stairs are cut directly into the rock on the east side of the terrace! Go, now!"

"I'm not leaving you, Julian!" Elena insisted, clutching Titan’s harness.

"You have to!" Julian yelled, firing three suppressive rounds through the shattered living room window to drive back the lead breacher. "They aren't here for the ledger anymore! Gregory wants the bloodline erased! If you die, Arthur's legacy dies with you! Marcus!"

Marcus appeared at the eastern archway of the terrace, his tactical vest scorched, an assault rifle raised to his shoulder. "I've secured the cliff staircase, boss! But we only have thirty seconds before they flank the perimeter!"

"Take them down to the boat!" Julian commanded, reloading his weapon with lethal efficiency. "I'll collapse the foyer staircase and hold the chokepoint!"

Arthur gripped Julian’s arm, his eyes burning with fierce emotion. "Do not die for my sins, Julian. That is an order."

Julian looked at his oldest friend and gave a grim, resolute nod. "I don't plan on dying today, Arthur. Now get your daughter to safety!"

Arthur grabbed Elena’s hand, pulling her toward the narrow, winding stone stairs cut directly into the sheer cliffside leading down to the water. Titan hesitated for a fraction of a second, looking back at Julian with a deep whine, torn between his two masters.

"Go with them, boy! Guard her!" Julian barked.

Titan turned and bounded down the rocky steps, his heavy paws keeping pace with Elena as bullets chipped the limestone above their heads.

Elena ran, the spray of the Mediterranean mist rising from the rocks below. Behind them, the sounds of intense automatic gunfire and the concussive crunches of grenades echoed from the villa above. Julian was holding the line alone, turning the luxury home into a slaughterhouse to buy them seconds.

Halfway down the cliff, the narrow staircase turned sharply around a blind outcropping of rock.

Marcus was leading the way, his rifle raised, when a figure stepped out from the shadow of the cliffside cave ahead.

There was a muffled thwip-thwip.

Marcus gasped, two dark crimson spots blooming instantly on the center of his chest. He collapsed backward onto the stone steps, his weapon clattering into the churning sea below.

Standing on the landing ahead, a suppressed pistol held in gloved hands, was a man with stark white hair, wearing a dark maritime jacket. His face was an older, twisted reflection of Arthur’s own.

Gregory Sterling smiled, his pale, cold eyes locking onto Elena.

"Hello, little niece," Gregory said softly, raising the barrel directly toward her forehead. "It seems the family reunion ends right here."
