Chapter 4 - The Relic Around Her Neck

The smell of cordite hung heavy in the damp night air. Down in the estate’s subterranean motor pool, the engine of an armored black SUV purred with muffled power. Julian threw a heavy canvas duffel into the trunk while Marcus barked orders into his comms, directing the remaining perimeter guards to secure the property.
Elena sat on the leather passenger seat, the door open, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she unclasped the thin gold chain from around her neck. Titan sat at her feet, his head resting heavily on her knees, his scarred brow furrowed as if sensing her inner turmoil.
"My father gave me this on my tenth birthday," Elena said, her voice hollow as Julian approached. "He told me it was an antique locket from my great-grandmother. He told me never to take it off, no matter what happened."
Julian leaned into the vehicle, taking the small oval pendant between his scarred fingertips. He examined the delicate filigree. "Arthur was a master of misdirection. He knew that if the board raided his properties, they would dismantle every safe, crack every hard drive, and torture every associate. But they would never search a grieving schoolgirl for an international banking ledger."
Julian took a small jeweler’s blade from his pocket. With practiced precision, he inserted the edge into an almost invisible seam along the locket's rim and twisted gently.
There was a faint click.
The pendant did not hold a photograph. Inside lay a micro-machined titanium cylinder no larger than the tip of a pencil, etched with microscopic alphanumeric markings.
"What is that?" Elena asked, leaning closer.
"The master encryption seed for the Sterling Trust," Julian said grimly, holding it up to the overhead fluorescent light. "Arthur funneled every scrap of evidence—bribes, manifests, bank accounts, and political payoffs—into an offshore cold-storage server. This cylinder contains the private key. With this, we can bring down the Vanguard syndicate and every corrupt official on their payroll."
"And without it?"
"Without it, my father is leverage," Elena realized, the truth hitting her like physical blow. "They don't just want him dead. They need this data to protect themselves before they execute him."
Julian nodded slowly. "The man on the radio—Cassian Moreau. He was your father’s former chief operating officer. He’s the one who betrayed Arthur twelve years ago. He thought Arthur burned in the house, but when our shell companies started freezing his accounts last month, he realized the ghost had returned."
"Then we trade it," Elena said without hesitation, reaching out to snatch the titanium piece back. "We give Cassian the key, and we get my father back."
Julian caught her wrist. His grip was firm, but his gaze was filled with a painful sympathy. "Cassian doesn't make trades, Elena. He eliminates liabilities. If you hand this over at the docks, he will kill Arthur, then he will kill you, and then he will erase every trace of the Sterling family forever."
"Then what do we do?" she demanded, tears threatening to spill once more. "Let him die?"
"No," Julian replied, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register. "We go to Marseille. We bring the key. But we don't bring a ransom."

He turned to the back of the SUV, opening a steel weapons case. Titan stood up instantly, letting out a sharp whine of anticipation.
"We bring an army," Julian said, sliding a modified tactical harness over Titan's broad back. "And we make them regret ever waking the dead."
