Chapter 14 - Sins of the Brother

Arthur immediately shoved Elena behind his back, placing his own battered body between the barrel of the gun and his daughter. Titan stood beside them on the narrow rock ledge, his hackles raised so violently they looked like quills, a terrifying, guttural snarl vibrating through his massive frame.

"Gregory," Arthur breathed, his voice dripping with absolute hatred. "Leave the child out of this. Your quarrel is with me."

Gregory laughed—a dry, rasping sound that was swallowed by the crashing waves sixty feet below. "My quarrel was always with you, Arthur. You, the golden son. The one Father trusted with the fleets, while I was relegated to managing shipping manifests in dusty port offices. You thought you were so righteous, building schools and saving drowning sailors, while I was building the real wealth of this empire."

"By trafficking weapons and blood money?" Arthur retorted, stepping an inch closer, trying to calculate the distance. "You burned our family estate! You murdered Catherine!"

"Catherine was a fool who threatened to call the authorities when she found the forged manifests in my study," Gregory snarled, the polished facade cracking to reveal the rotting madness beneath. "She made her choice, Arthur! Just as you made yours when you refused to let me control the logistics! I spent twenty years living like a ghost in the shadows while you basked in the glory of the Sterling name!"

Gregory’s cold eyes shifted toward Elena, who stood pressed against the cliff wall, her heart pounding with a deafening rhythm.

"And now, your precious daughter will pay the final price," Gregory whispered, his finger tightening on the trigger. "When both of you are floating in the harbor, the courts will recognize my secondary trust. The Sterling empire will finally belong to the one who had the stomach to rule it."

"You forgot one thing, Uncle," Elena said, her voice shaking with controlled fury, refusing to look down at the gun.

Gregory’s brow furrowed slightly. "And what is that, girl?"

"Titan doesn't forget a scent."

At that exact second, from the stone archway above them, Julian Vance dropped down onto the rocky landing like an avenging shadow. His clothes were torn, his knuckles bloody, but his eyes were blazing. He collided with Gregory’s flank with the force of a freight train, knocking the older man's arm upward just as the gun discharged.

The bullet struck the rock face above Elena's head, showering them in white limestone dust.

Gregory screamed in rage, slamming his elbow into Julian's wounded side, wrestling for control of the weapon. The two men rolled violently toward the edge of the sheer drop, the waves crashing violently against the jagged rocks below.

"Julian!" Arthur shouted, lunging forward to help.

Gregory managed to bring the pistol down, aiming it squarely at Julian's temple. "Die, you miserable stray!"

"Titan, take him!" Elena screamed.

Titan launched forward across the narrow ledge. The massive Cane Corso cleared the five-foot gap in a single, explosive bound, his powerful jaws clamping down hard on Gregory’s gun hand. The bone snapped with a sickening crunch. Gregory shrieked in blinding agony as the weapon tumbled over the cliff edge, plunging into the dark sea.

Julian used the distraction to drive his fist into Gregory's jaw, pinning the traitor to the stone.

Titan stood over Gregory, his heavy paws planted squarely on the man's chest, his blood-stained jaws inches from Gregory's terrified eyes. The arrogant mastermind of the Vanguard Syndicate was reduced to a whimpering wreck beneath the hound’s unyielding weight.

Arthur stepped forward, looking down at his brother with an expression of profound, exhausted pity.

"The ghost story is over, Gregory," Arthur said softly.
