Chapter 7 - The Devil of Marseille

Cassian Moreau walked with the effortless confidence of a man who believed the world belonged to him by divine right. His silver umbrella shielded him perfectly from the downpour, contrasting starkly with his tactical operatives who moved around him like soaked attack dogs.

"Julian!" Cassian’s cultured voice carried effortlessly over the pounding rain. "Must we always conduct our business like common street thugs? Come out! Let us speak like civilized men!"

Inside the wrecked SUV, Marcus was bandaging a deep cut on his forearm, his weapon resting on his knee. "I can take two of them from this angle, sir. But Moreau has body armor."

"No," Julian whispered, peering through the shattered window frame. "Cassian wants the theater. He won't order them to fire until he knows the key is intact. Elena, stay low. Titan, sit."

The massive hound lowered his haunches, but his low, rumbling growl never ceased. His dark eyes remained locked onto Cassian with an uncanny, predatory focus.

Julian stepped out of the vehicle, his hands held casually at shoulder height, empty of weapons. The rain soaked through his crisp white shirt and tailored vest in seconds, plastering his dark hair to his forehead. He walked forward ten paces into the blinding glare of the enemy headlights.

"You're a long way from your penthouse in Monaco, Cassian," Julian called out, his tone dripping with disdain. "Is the board getting nervous?"

Cassian smiled, a thin, cruel gesture that didn't touch his pale blue eyes. "The board is entirely composed of pragmatists, Julian. They don't care how the ledger is retrieved, only that Arthur Sterling's little ghost story comes to an end. Where is the girl?"

"Safe," Julian replied smoothly. "Far beyond your reach."

Cassian chuckled, a soft, patronizing sound. "Do not insult my intelligence, Vance. My men tracked her from her apartment to your villa. She was in the car when my drivers ran you off the cliff. And more importantly... she carries her mother’s locket."

Inside the car, Elena clutched the cold metal of the gun Julian had given her. Hearing Cassian speak her mother's name sent a violent surge of adrenaline through her veins.

"You want the ledger?" Julian asked, taking a half-step forward. "Bring Arthur out. Let me see he's breathing."

Cassian sighed, tilting his umbrella slightly. He gestured to the shadows behind him. Two more armed guards emerged from a darkened industrial van parked near the container wall, dragging a man between them.

Elena gasped, pressing her hand against her mouth to stifle the scream.

The man was battered, his clothes torn, his gray hair matted with dried blood. Yet despite the zip-ties binding his wrists and the heavy bruises marring his face, he held his head upright. The distinctive scar above his left brow was unmistakable.

Arthur Sterling was alive.

"Papa..." Elena breathed, the word tearing at her chest. Titan let out a sharp whine, scratching furiously at the car's interior door panel, recognizing his master across the storm.

Arthur’s swollen eyes flickered across the yard, landing on the crumpled SUV. Even from fifty yards away, he seemed to know she was inside.

"Julian!" Arthur’s hoarse voice cracked against the rain. "Don't give him anything! Drive the girl away! Let them burn it all!"

One of the guards struck Arthur across the ribs with the butt of a rifle, sending him to his knees in the mud.

"Stop!" Elena shouted, unable to bear the sight. She kicked open the damaged car door and stepped out into the deluge.
