Chapter 12 - Blood Beneath the Ledger

The silence on the sunlit terrace turned instantly brittle. Elena stared at the yellowed document, her eyes scanning the faded signature at the bottom: Gregory Sterling. The handwriting was precise, sharp, and identical to the cursive notes she remembered inside the vintage books lining her father's old library.

"Uncle Gregory?" Elena’s voice was barely a whisper. "He died when I was four years old. I barely remember his face."

Arthur’s face was dark, the newfound peace of the morning completely erased. "That’s what we were told. His private plane went down over the Adriatic. The wreckage was scattered across five miles of deep water; no bodies were ever recovered. We buried an empty plaque in the family crypt, and I inherited the entirety of the Sterling shipping lines."

Julian stepped closer, picking up the document and holding it toward the light to inspect the watermark. "If Gregory survived twenty years ago, it means the conspiracy didn't begin with Cassian Moreau’s greed. It began as a family coup."

"Gregory always despised the legitimate side of the business," Arthur said, his fists clenching at his sides. "He wanted to use our freight network to move untraceable currency and black-market antiquities. I threatened to cut him off from the family trust completely. A week later, his plane went down."

"He didn't die," Julian deduced, his strategic mind piecing the puzzle together with cold speed. "He faked his demise, assumed an alias, and built the Vanguard Syndicate from the shadows, using Cassian as his public proxy. When Arthur uncovered the smuggling routes twelve years ago, Gregory realized his brother had stumbled upon his network. So he ordered the fire."

Elena felt a wave of nausea wash over her. "All this time... you thought you were fighting corporate rivals, but you were being hunted by your own flesh and blood?"

Titan suddenly lifted his head from Elena’s knee, his ears swiveling toward the interior of the villa. A low, barely audible rumble vibrated in his throat.

"Titan, quiet," Elena murmured softly, but the hound did not relax. He stood up, turning his broad chest toward the closed glass doors of the villa.

Inside the quiet house, a landline phone began to ring.

The sound was sharp, rhythmic, and utterly jarring. Arthur had purchased the villa only forty-eight hours ago under a blind corporate trust; no one outside of Julian’s inner circle possessed that number.

Julian reached for the concealed firearm beneath his linen shirt, motioning for Arthur and Elena to stay on the terrace. "Marcus is patrolling the lower grounds. Stay behind me."

Julian stepped through the sliding doors, his footsteps silent on the polished tile. He approached the marble console table in the foyer where the antique telephone sat screaming. With deliberate care, he lifted the receiver and pressed it to his ear, remaining completely silent.

A voice answered from the other end. It was not synthetic, nor was it frantic like Cassian's. It was aged, gravelly, and carried the unmistakable aristocratic cadence of the Sterling lineage.

"You always were an efficient guard dog, Julian," the man said, a dry, rasping chuckle echoing through the line. "Cassian was a necessary sacrifice. He became arrogant, messy, and loud. But my brother... my dear brother Arthur should have stayed in the grave where I put him."

Julian’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. "Gregory."

"Tell Arthur to enjoy the sun while it lasts," the voice whispered, chilling in its absolute calm. "He took my syndicate apart piece by piece. Now, I am going to take back the only thing he has left."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Before Julian could turn around, an ear-splitting explosion rattled the foundations of the villa, blowing the heavy iron entrance gates clean off their hinges.
