SHADOWS OF THE LOST HEIR / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Crest

Three weeks later, the afternoon sun cast a warm, tranquil glow over the restored courtyard of the Sterling estate in Valetta. The scars of the battle had been meticulously repaired; the marble fountain burled with fresh, crystal-clear water, and the surrounding cypress trees swayed gently in the Mediterranean breeze.

Elena sat on the stone steps leading down to the gardens, dressed in a simple navy sundress, holding a cup of tea. Beside her lay Titan, his massive head resting comfortably on her lap, his eyes half-closed as she idly stroked the thick fur behind his cropped ears. The surgical scar down his right eye caught the sunlight—no longer a symbol of grief, but a badge of unbroken loyalty.

The heavy front doors opened, and Arthur walked out onto the veranda. He was dressed in a sharp linen suit, looking healthier than he had in twelve years. The hollow exhaustion had left his face, replaced by the dignified warmth Elena remembered from her childhood.

Behind him walked Julian, carrying a leather briefcase, his posture straight despite the lingering bandages beneath his crisp shirt.

"The federal court in Geneva finalized the proceedings an hour ago," Julian announced, stepping down the stairs and sitting beside Elena. "Gregory will spend the remainder of his life in a maximum-security penitentiary in the Swiss Alps. Every asset stolen by the Vanguard has been liquidated and returned to the Sterling charitable foundation."

Arthur leaned against the stone railing, watching his daughter with a soft, affectionate smile. "The board of directors held an emergency meeting this morning. They voted unanimously to appoint a new Chief Executive Officer for Sterling Maritime Logistics."

Elena looked up, surprised. "Papa, you're taking the company back?"

Arthur shook his head gently. "No, sweetheart. I spent forty years chasing ships and ledgers, and it nearly cost me everything that mattered. I'm retiring to the vineyard in Tuscany. The board didn't vote for me."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box, opening it to reveal a gleaming gold seal—the official crest of the Sterling fleet.

"They voted for you, Elena," Arthur said, placing the box in her hands. "If you want it."

Elena looked down at the crest, then at her father, her eyes shining with emotion. "I won't do it alone, Papa."

She turned her gaze toward Julian, offering him a knowing, determined smile. "Julian Vance remains the primary advisor and chief operating partner. On one condition."

Julian raised an eyebrow, an amused smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "And what condition would that be, Ms. Sterling?"

Elena patted Titan’s broad, scarred head. "Titan gets a permanent seat in the boardroom. And a corner office with a view of the harbor."

Julian chuckled softly, a genuine, warm sound that cut through years of stoicism. "Agreed."

Arthur walked down the steps and sat on the stone beside Elena, wrapping an arm around his daughter's shoulders. Julian sat on her other side, while Titan let out a deep, contented sigh, closing his eyes completely as the gentle sea breeze ruffled his coat.

For twelve years, they had been ghosts, separated by fire, lies, and distance. But as the sun began its slow descent into the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, the shadows finally retreated. The Sterling name was no longer a target of vengeance—it was a family, unbroken and home at last.
