Chapter 8 - Bloodline

The torrential rain struck Elena’s face like ice, but she felt entirely numb. She stepped into the clearing between the two vehicles, her silk blouse soaked through, her dark hair plastered to her shoulders. Beside her, Titan leaped out of the ruined SUV, his massive black frame bristling, walking step-for-step with her, guarding her flank.

"Elena, get back in the vehicle!" Julian barked without looking back, his voice strained with genuine terror for the first time.

"No," she said, her voice ringing clear and steady above the howling wind.

Across the mud, Arthur lifted his bruised head. When his gaze locked onto Elena, his weathered face crumpled into an expression of profound, agonizing love. "Elena... no, sweetheart... you shouldn't have come..."

"Look at you," Cassian murmured, stepping around Julian, his eyes drinking in the sight of her with predatory satisfaction. "The spitting image of your mother. Beautiful. Defiant. And utterly doomed by your father's foolish idealism."

"Let him go, Cassian," Elena said, stepping past Julian until she stood ten paces from the man who had destroyed her family. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the tiny titanium cylinder, holding it high between her thumb and forefinger. "This is what you've spent twelve years hunting for. Every account. Every transaction. The evidence that can put you and your entire syndicate in a federal prison for life."

Cassian’s eyes dilated at the sight of the metallic cylinder. The smug arrogance melted into raw, unadulterated greed.

"Clever Arthur," Cassian whispered. "Hiding the kingdom in a child's toy. Throw it to me, Elena, and I swear on my life your father walks free tonight."

"Your life isn't worth the mud on my boots," Elena spat.

Arthur struggled violently against his captors, his voice raw: "Elena! Do not trust him! He killed your mother! The fire wasn't an accident—Cassian locked the doors himself!"

The world seemed to stop spinning.

Elena stared at Cassian, the breath completely leaving her lungs. For twelve years, she had lived with the tragic belief that an electrical fault had consumed her childhood home, taking her mother's life in the smoke.

"You..." Elena choked, her fingers trembling around the titanium key. "You murdered her."

Cassian’s facade vanished entirely, replaced by a cold, venomous glare. He lowered the umbrella, letting the rain soak his tailored shoulders. "Your mother was collateral damage, little girl. Arthur wouldn't bend, so she had to break. And now, the family reunion is over."

Cassian raised his hand to signal his men. "Kill the men. Take the girl. Retrieve the key."

Before the guards could raise their barrels, Arthur dropped his shoulder, slamming his entire body weight into the guard holding him, knocking the man into the deep mud.

"Titan, kill!" Arthur roared with the last ounce of his strength.

The command shattered the tension like a gunshot.

Titan didn't hesitate. With a ferocious, guttural roar that echoed off the shipping containers, the massive Cane Corso launched across the slick mud, moving like a shadow across the storm, aiming straight for the men holding Arthur Sterling.
