Chapter 13 - The Broken Cord

The ballroom emptied slowly as the federal agents cordoned off the stage and the press rushed out to file their front-page scoops.

In the private VIP lounge adjacent to the ballroom, the silence was suffocating. Claire Thorne sat in a leather armchair, her face buried in her trembling hands, weeping softly.

Julian stood by the window, a clean towel pressed against the graze on his shoulder. Arthur sat across from his daughter, his expression carved from stone.

""I didn't know, Julian,"" Claire sobbed, looking up at her brother with red, swollen eyes. ""I swear to God, I didn't know he was going to hurt you. Elena told me you had agreed to step down... she said you just wanted out of the business...""

Julian looked at his sister. The anger that had sustained him through the long climb up the maintenance shaft was gone, replaced by a profound, hollow exhaustion.

""You wanted the title so badly, Claire,"" Julian said softly, his voice thick with sorrow. ""You were willing to believe a transparent lie just so you wouldn't have to look in the mirror and admit you were stealing my inheritance.""

""I was trying to save the company!"" she cried out. ""The board was turning on Father! Vane had the debt notes!""

""Vane bought those notes with money he stole from our overseas accounts, you foolish girl,"" Arthur said, his voice cold and cutting. ""He played your vanity like an instrument. And in doing so, you nearly signed your brother’s execution order.""

Claire flinched, looking away in shame.

Julian turned his back on her, walking toward the terrace doors where Sofia stood quietly, watching the sunrise break over the city skyline. The storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, pale morning that painted the glass towers in shades of rose and gold.

""Sofia,"" Julian said gently.

She turned to face him. Without the adrenaline running through her veins, the sheer exhaustion of the night had crashed down upon her. Her uniform was ruined, her hands were bandaged, and every bone in her body ached.

""The federal marshals want my statement,"" she said softly. ""I told them everything I saw in the garage.""

""You don't have to work here anymore,"" Julian said, his eyes filled with an intensity that made her breath catch. ""My father is setting up a trust fund. Any debt you have is gone. Your family will be cared for permanently.""

Sofia smiled faintly, though there was no joy in it. ""I didn't do it for a trust fund, Julian.""

""I know,"" he replied, reaching out to gently touch the bruise along her cheekbone. ""That's why you deserve it.""

Before she could answer, his phone buzzed sharply on the table behind him. It was a private, unlisted frequency. Julian picked it up, pressing it to his ear.

""Thorne,"" he said.

A digitized, distorted voice spoke on the other end, cold as dry ice:

""Vane was merely a contractor, Mr. Thorne. Did you really think one arrest closes the ledger?""
