Chapter 10 - The Grand Illusion

The thirty-fourth floor was an alternate reality of blinding crystal chandeliers, clinking champagne flutes, and the soft murmur of string quartets. Over two hundred of the city’s elite—politicians, hedge fund magnates, and media moguls—mingled in black-tie attire, utterly unaware of the gunfire and poison that had played out just floors below them.
At the far end of the ballroom, standing before a velvet-draped stage flanked by media cameras, stood Marcus Vane.
Vane was in his early fifties, with slicked-back silver hair, razor-sharp cheekbones, and an aura of supreme, unshakeable confidence. He wore a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, holding a glass of vintage champagne as he chatted smoothly with the city's district attorney.
Behind the mirrored service doors, Sofia, Julian, and Arthur stood in the shadows. Julian had changed into a fresh shirt from his private suite, though he was still pale, his shoulder bandaged beneath the dark fabric of his blazer. Sofia remained in her soaked, disheveled uniform, refusing Arthur's offer to wait in safety downstairs.
""I finish what I started,"" she had told him, her voice brooking no argument.
""Look at him,"" Julian whispered, his gaze fixed on Vane through the two-way glass. ""He thinks he’s already won.""
Beside Vane stood Claire Thorne. She was twenty-four, stunning, and visibly terrified. Her fingers clutched her champagne glass so tightly her knuckles were white. Her eyes darted constantly toward the entrance, an unspoken dread written across every line of her posture. She knew something was wrong. She knew her brother hadn't arrived.
""Ladies and gentlemen,"" Marcus Vane’s amplified voice resonated through the ballroom as he stepped up to the microphone on the stage. The music faded; the crowd gathered closer, smiling politely for the flashes of the press cameras.
""Tonight marks a historic turning point for Thorne Enterprises and the Vane Logistics Group,"" Vane announced smoothly, his charismatic smile radiating power. ""Due to unforeseen... health circumstances regarding my dear friend Arthur Thorne, the board has approved a decisive consolidation of assets under the visionary leadership of Miss Claire Thorne and myself.""
A ripple of polite applause cascaded through the room. Claire bowed her head, looking as though she might faint on the spot.
""Before we sign the final registry tonight,"" Vane continued, raising his glass high, ""I would like to offer a toast to family... and the smooth transition of power.""
""A lovely speech, Marcus,"" a voice boomed from the back of the room, cutting through the applause like a razor through silk.

The heavy double doors swung open with a resounding thud.
Arthur Thorne strode into the ballroom, his cane striking the polished parquet floor with deliberate, measured power. And beside him, his arm resting lightly across Sofia’s shoulder, walked Julian Thorne—alive, bleeding, and staring directly into Marcus Vane’s eyes.
