Chapter 4 - The Spine of the Tower

The air inside the maintenance shaft was suffocatingly hot, thick with the smell of scorched ozone, grease, and decades of stagnant dust. The only sound was the hollow, rhythmic clank of their shoes against the iron rungs and Julian’s ragged, wheezing gasps above her.

Every rung was an ordeal. Julian’s hands were shaking so violently that Sofia had to keep one hand pressed firmly against the small of his back, physically bracing his torso to prevent him from tumbling backward into the void below. Beneath them, the shaft plunged down into an abyss of darkness that dropped five stories into the hotel's boiler foundations.

""Keep moving,"" Sofia urged through clenched teeth, her calves burning with lactic acid. ""Don't look down. Just find the next rung.""

""You... shouldn't have... stayed,"" Julian choked out, pausing on a narrow steel grating that served as an inspection platform between the fourth and fifth floors. He collapsed onto his knees, coughing violently into his sleeve. When he pulled his arm away, dark flecks of blood marked the white cuff of his shirt.

""What did they inject you with?"" Sofia asked, dropping beside him on the cold metal grating. The vibration of the building hummed through the steel mesh.

""Neurotoxin... synthetic organophosphate,"" Julian said, his head hanging between his shoulders. His skin had taken on an unnatural, gray pallor beneath the shaft's amber utility lights. ""Standard black-market sedative used by private security firms. In high doses, it induces cardiac arrest within an hour. They didn't just want me out of the way. They wanted it to look like my heart gave out while I was sitting in my car.""

""How much time do you have?"" Sofia asked, her stomach dropping.

Julian checked his watch, his vision blurring as he squinted at the glowing hands. ""Twenty minutes. Maybe twenty-five before the pulmonary edema sets in.""

Sofia felt a surge of cold fury wash over her fear. This wasn't just corporate intrigue; it was cold-blooded murder disguised as natural causes, designed to look neat on an autopsy report signed by a coroner already in Marcus Vane's pocket.

""Where is the antidote?""

""In my penthouse suite... thirty-second floor,"" Julian said, closing his eyes for a moment to fight off a wave of vertigo. ""My personal medical kit has atropine injectors. But Vane’s men will have the floor locked down. My father is in the grand ballroom on thirty-four. If I can’t reach him before midnight...""

""We go to thirty-two first,"" Sofia stated firmly, standing up and reaching for his hand. ""You’re no good to your father dead on the carpet.""

Julian looked up at her. For the first time, the desperate haze in his eyes shifted, replaced by genuine bewilderment. ""Why are you doing this? You don't even know me.""

May you like

""Because I watched them poison you, Julian,"" she said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. ""And because people like Vane think people like me don't exist until they need someone to mop up their blood. Now get up.""

As Julian reached out to grasp her hand, a sharp, mechanical ping resonated through the vertical hollow of the shaft. Above them, the motorized cables of the freight elevator began to hum, descending rapidly toward their position.
