Chapter 8 - The Sanctuary

The catering lift decelerated with a stomach-churning drop, the doors sliding open to reveal the dimly lit, vaulted foyer of the thirty-second floor.
Julian’s private suite was vast, a minimalist cathedral of glass, dark walnut wood, and quiet wealth. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the sprawling city below, a sea of twinkling gold lights oblivious to the blood being spilled in the clouds.
""Julian, where is it?"" Sofia cried, dropping to her knees and hauling his limp torso out of the lift onto the dark hardwood floor.
Julian’s eyes were glassy, staring unblinkingly at the ceiling. His chest barely moved. A thin line of pink froth bubbled at the corner of his mouth.
""Julian!"" Sofia shook his shoulders frantically.
With the last vestige of his fading consciousness, his trembling right hand lifted and tapped the underside of the floating marble console in the entryway.
Sofia threw herself under the desk. Her fingers scrambled frantically along the polished underside until they brushed against a hidden latch. A small panel clicked open, dropping a brushed aluminum case onto the floor with a metallic clatter.
Sofia ripped the latches open. Inside lay two auto-injectors labeled ATROPINE SULFATE alongside an array of sterile ampoules.
Without waiting a single second, Sofia tore the safety cap off the first injector, just as she had been trained in the hotel’s rudimentary first-aid course. She slammed the needle straight through Julian’s trousers into his outer thigh.
A sharp mechanical click echoed through the room.
Julian gasped—a violent, full-body spasm that arched his back off the floor. His hands shot out, clutching at the air as his lungs expanded with a desperate, ragged intake of oxygen. His pulse roared back to life, hammering visibly against the side of his neck like a trapped bird.
""Breathe,"" Sofia pleaded, tears of pure terror finally escaping her eyes as she held his head off the cold floor. ""Julian, breathe!""
He coughed violently, curling onto his side, shivering uncontrollably as the chemical counter-agent fought the paralytic in his blood. His skin was drenched in cold sweat, but the deadly gray pallor slowly receded, replaced by a flush of feverish red.
For nearly five minutes, neither of them moved. Julian lay curled on the floor, dragging in air, while Sofia sat back against the wall, her hands trembling so violently she couldn't clasp them together.

Then, the private elevator chime rang out in the quiet suite.
Sofia scrambled backward, her breath catching in her throat. Across the room, the primary elevator doors began to slide open, casting a long, sharp shadow into the darkened penthouse.
