Chapter 11 - The Fractured Mask

The silence that fell over the grand ballroom was absolute, broken only by the sharp, collective intake of breath from two hundred high-society guests.
Marcus Vane’s hand froze mid-air, the champagne glass hovering near his lips. For a split second, the polished mask of corporate perfection cracked, revealing the raw, venomous fury of a cornered beast. His eyes darted to the back corners of the room, looking for the enforcers who were supposed to have buried Julian hours ago.
They were gone. Arthur’s personal security detail had already quietly swept the perimeter.
""Julian..."" Claire whispered, the glass slipping from her trembling fingers and shattering on the stage floor, spraying champagne across her satin gown. ""You're... you were in an accident...""
""No accident, Claire,"" Julian said, his voice ringing clear and steady across the silent hall. He walked down the central aisle, the crowd parting before him like the Red Sea. ""Just a failed assassination attempt in our private parking bay, courtesy of your new business partner.""
The press cameras exploded into a frenzy of flashing lights, shutter clicks rattling like machine-gun fire.
""Julian, please,"" Marcus Vane said smoothly, recovering his composure with terrifying speed as he stepped to the edge of the stage. He offered an indulgent, paternal smile to the cameras. ""You appear to be unwell. Someone call the hotel physician. The young man is clearly suffering from a concussion or a chemical delusion.""
""A chemical delusion?"" Sofia’s voice cut through the room, clear and unyielding.
She stepped out from behind Julian, walking straight toward the front of the stage. The grand ballroom guests stared at her—a banquet server, soaking wet, covered in grease and dried blood, holding up the brushed aluminum medical kit.
""I pulled this from his neck forty minutes ago,"" Sofia announced, holding up the empty syringe containing trace amounts of the clear paralytic. ""And this keycard belongs to your enforcer, who is currently tied to a steam pipe on floor eight. Would you like to explain to the press why your private security frequency matches the radio in my hand, Mr. Vane?""
Vane’s eyes locked onto Sofia with murder in them. ""Who is this girl? Security, remove this trespassing servant immediately!""
Not a single guard moved.

Arthur Thorne stopped at the foot of the stage, leaning his weight onto his silver cane and looking up at Vane with utter contempt.
""The only person leaving this room in cuffs, Marcus,"" Arthur whispered, his voice carrying clearly into the live media microphones, ""is you.""
