Chapter 5 - The Glass Corridor

The counterweight of the elevator swooped past them with a terrifying gust of displaced wind, rattling the metal catwalk. Sofia dragged Julian flat against the damp concrete wall, pressing herself against him to stay clear of the whirring steel cables.
Through the grated opening of the service floor door on level seven, Sofia saw shadows moving. The hotel wasn't just being infiltrated; it was entirely under siege. Uniformed security guards—men she recognized from her daily shifts—were conferring in low tones with the two suited enforcers from the garage.
""They’ve flipped hotel security,"" Sofia whispered, her mouth dry. ""The whole internal network is compromised.""
""Vane doesn't leave loose ends,"" Julian muttered. His breathing was growing increasingly labored, a wet, rattling wheeze accompanying every exhalation. He slumped heavily against the doorframe of the service exit. ""The freight elevator... we can't take it up. They’ll track the floor stops on the central console.""
""Then we take the guest express,"" Sofia replied, her mind racing through the blueprint of the hotel she had cleaned for the past three years. ""Floor eight is the luxury spa and terrace. It has an open breezeway that connects the service wing to the VIP towers. Nobody goes there after ten p.m.""
With Julian leaning heavily on her shoulder, Sofia carefully unlatched the inspection door and slipped out onto the eighth-floor mezzanine. The opulent silence of the Grand Elysium swallowed them immediately. Thick, plush carpets muffled their uneven footfalls; soft jazz filtered down from discreet ceiling speakers, and the air smelled of eucalyptus and polished marble.
The contrast was sickening. Downstairs, a man had nearly been murdered; upstairs, high society sipped champagne, utterly oblivious to the rot consuming the foundation beneath their feet.
They navigated the winding glass corridor that overlooked the hotel’s indoor botanical gardens. The glass walls reflected Julian’s ghastly, sweat-soaked face. Every few steps, his knees buckled, forcing Sofia to brace all her strength against his frame.
""Almost there,"" she lied, her muscles screaming in protest.
Suddenly, the glass doors at the far end of the corridor slid open with a whisper.
Sofia froze, pulling Julian into the alcove of an oversized marble planter. Peering through the dense fronds of an indoor palm, she saw a woman walking purposefully toward them. She wore an elegant, tailored charcoal pantsuit, high heels clicking sharply against the stone floor. Her hair was pulled back into a severe, sleek bun, and an encrypted earpiece flashed blue against her ear.
Julian stiffened, his fingers digging painfully into Sofia’s forearm.
""Elena,"" he breathed, the word caught between shock and betrayal.

""Who is she?"" Sofia whispered.
""My sister's head of security,"" Julian rasped, his voice trembling with disbelief. ""She was supposed to be guarding my father.""
