Chapter 14 - The Shadow Above

Julian’s face went completely pale, his hand gripping the phone until his knuckles turned bone-white.
""Who is this?"" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register that made Arthur look up sharply from across the room.
""Your father took something from the Consortium twenty years ago,"" the mechanical voice whispered through the receiver. ""A secret buried beneath the foundations of the Elysium. Marcus Vane was sent to retrieve it legally through foreclosure. Now that you have forced our hand into violence, the terms have changed.""
The call clicked dead.
Julian lowered the phone, his mind reeling. He looked at his father. Arthur had frozen in his seat, the old man’s face completely devoid of color, his hands trembling violently against the silver handle of his cane.
""Father,"" Julian said, stepping closer, his heart hammering against his ribs anew. ""What was that? Who was on that line?""
Arthur didn't speak. For the first time in his life, Julian saw true, unadulterated terror in his father's eyes. The legendary titan of industry looked small, frail, and utterly broken.
""The Consortium,"" Arthur whispered, the word sounding like a curse that had haunted his nightmares for decades. ""They found it.""
""Found what?"" Sofia asked, stepping forward, the hair on the back of her neck standing on end.
""The vault,"" Arthur murmured, staring blankly at the floor. ""When I built the Grand Elysium thirty years ago, it wasn't just a luxury hotel. It was built over the city’s old Cold War bunker network. Beneath the lowest parking tier... beneath sub-level four... there is a secure facility.""
Julian stared at his father in absolute horror. ""The enforcers in the garage... they weren't waiting to kill me. They were using my biometric scanner to access the sub-level.""
Sofia’s blood ran cold. The image of the two suited men leaning over Julian in the leather armchair flashed in her mind. One had injected him, yes—but the other had held Julian’s limp thumb against a handheld black terminal before walking away toward the sedan.
""They didn't just want you dead, Julian,"" Sofia breathed, the terrible reality sinking in. ""They were using your body as a key.""

At that exact moment, a deep, bone-rattling tremor shook the entire skyscraper.
The chandeliers swayed violently; the floor beneath their feet groaned as a muffled, thunderous detonation echoed from the deepest subterranean levels of the hotel. The lights flickered, died, and were replaced by the harsh red glare of the emergency backup generators.
