Chapter 1 - The Echo of Falling Silk

The polished Italian marble carried the chill of an open grave. Elena stood frozen, her chest heaving beneath the tailored bodice of her royal-blue gown, watching her own reflection twist across the floorboards. Just seconds ago, her manicured fingers had discarded the swaddled bundle without a second thought. Now, her husband Julian stood silhouetted against the open doorway, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles jumped beneath pale skin. Behind him, two uniformed officers held their hands near their holsters, their boots tracking wet autumn leaves onto the pristine floor.
Clara, the maid, remained on her knees. Her knuckles were bloodless where she clutched the crying infant against the coarse fabric of her apron. The baby boy, Leo, buried his tear-stained face into her shoulder, shuddering with rapid, terrified breaths. Clara looked up, her dark eyes hollowed by weeks of silent torment, yet burning with sudden defiance. She had swallowed her tongue for months while Elena played the grieving stepmother for the cameras and the cruel warden behind closed doors.
""Explain this, Elena,"" Julian said. His voice was not loud, but it possessed the cutting finality of an executioner's blade. He stepped forward, each measured pace echoing through the vaulted foyer.
Elena forced a high, brittle laugh. She smoothed the front of her dress, attempting to assemble the poise that had captivated high society for three years. ""Julian, darling, thank God you're home. The girl has completely lost her mind. She tried to take him out the side terrace. I had to restrain her—I was simply trying to keep Leo safe.""
Clara shook her head, tears cutting clean lines through the dust on her cheeks. ""She dragged him, Mr. Vance. On the stone. Because he wouldn't stop crying when she spilled her drink.""
""She’s lying! Look at her!"" Elena snapped, pointing a manicured, trembling finger downward. ""Look at the way she handles him! She's obsessed with what isn't hers!""
Julian stopped just inches from his wife. He did not look at her face; his gaze rested squarely on the frayed edge of Leo’s ivory blanket, which trailed across the floor like a torn shroud. Without a word, he reached down and lifted his son into his arms, feeling the tiny ribs shudder against his chest. As he held the boy close, the senior officer stepped forward, pulling a heavy pair of steel cuffs from his duty belt.
Elena took a step back, her heels clicking unevenly against the stone, the mask finally slipping from her eyes. ""Julian, you wouldn't dare.""
May you like
Julian leaned down toward his son, whispering softly to quiet the weeping, before turning his gaze back to his wife with an icy detachment that drained the air from the room. ""I told you what would happen if you ever laid a hand on him again, Elena. Officers, take her into the library. We are waiting for the second vehicle.""
Elena lunged forward, her nails clawing toward Julian’s jacket, but the officer caught her wrist mid-air. As she twisted, a silver key card slipped from her hidden pocket, skittering across the floor to stop dead against Clara’s knee. Clara glanced down, her eyes widening as she recognized the insignia of the private bank downtown.
