Chapter 15 - The Final Heir

The rain had ceased by the time Julian returned to the estate. The mansion stood in heavy silence, surrounded by crime scene tape that fluttered in the damp autumn breeze. Inside, restoration crews had already begun sweeping away the broken glass from the east wing windows, their boots tracking across the dark stains on the marble foyer.
Julian climbed the grand staircase, his footsteps heavy, the sealed envelope from the hospital laboratory clutched tightly in his hand. He found Clara in the second-floor nursery, sitting in the rocking chair beside Leo’s crib. The infant was sleeping soundly, his small chest rising and falling in deep, rhythmic breaths, entirely unaware of the empire that had nearly burned down around his cradle.
Clara looked up as Julian entered, noting the pale, haunted set of his jaw and the paper held in his white-knuckled grip. She didn't stand; she simply waited, her hands folded neatly over her lap.
""You knew what Elena would tell me at the hospital,"" Julian said, stopping at the foot of the crib.
""I knew she would try to use it as her final weapon,"" Clara replied evenly.
Julian laid the laboratory envelope onto the changing table. ""The genetic report from the depository database. Arthur’s DNA wasn't used for the conception.""
""No,"" Clara said softly. ""It wasn't.""
""He used mine,"" Julian whispered, the realization hitting him with the force of a physical blow. ""Arthur took the genetic material I banked before my deployment eight years ago—the samples I thought were destroyed when the clinic flooded.""
Clara stood up, looking directly into Julian’s eyes with absolute, unwavering clarity. ""Arthur knew his health was failing long before he let the family know. He knew Marcus was positioning himself to seize the firm, and he knew Elena’s family was applying financial pressure that would eventually crush him. He wanted an heir who carried the Vance bloodline, someone Marcus couldn't challenge on legitimacy.""
""He made me a father without my consent,"" Julian said, his voice trembling with a complex mixture of fury and overwhelming grief.
""He made you a protector, Julian,"" Clara countered, stepping closer, her voice soft but unyielding. ""He knew you would never fight for a corporate balance sheet. He knew you would let Marcus take the shipping lines before you would spill blood for money. But he knew you would tear down the world to save your own son.""
Julian looked down into the crib. The infant shifted in his sleep, turning his head toward the sound of Julian’s voice, his tiny hand reaching out unconsciously into the open air. The shape of the boy’s jaw, the curl of his dark hair—they were reflections Julian had seen in his own mirror every day of his life.
Julian slowly reached into the crib, letting Leo’s tiny fingers wrap around his thumb once more. The child settled immediately, a soft sigh escaping his lips as he drifted deeper into slumber.
""What happens now, Clara?"" Julian asked, not taking his eyes off the boy.
Clara picked up her coat from the chair, pausing by the nursery door. ""Now, Mr. Vance, we rebuild the firm so that when he comes of age, there is something left worth inheriting. I remain the trustee until he turns twenty-five. But you... you have a nursery to run.""
As she turned to leave, Julian’s phone buzzed sharply in his pocket. He pulled it out, glancing at the encrypted message that had just bypassed his private firewall.

The screen displayed a live surveillance feed of an unmarked private airstrip thirty miles outside the city, where a private jet had just landed with engines idling. The accompanying text read:
Marcus didn't work for Elena's family. He worked for the consortium in Geneva. They are coming for the child."
