Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Ledger

The harsh static of the recorder echoed off the high ceiling before a gravelly, cultured voice broke through the speaker—not Elena’s, but that of Julian’s own business partner, Marcus Vance, his older cousin and the managing director of Vance Maritime.
“If you’re hearing this, Elena,” the voice droned with cold precision, “then Julian has already discovered the discrepancies in the manifest. Do not return to the townhouse. The trust accounts have been liquidated through the Swiss accounts we established last October. Take the child if you can; he remains our only legal leverage against the board. If not, disappear. The authorities will assume Julian’s negligence led to the child’s decline.”
Julian stood motionless, water dripping from his soaked clothes onto the marble, forming a pool around his shoes. Clara dropped her head, her hand tightening over the IV tubing. Marcus had been the one to introduce Elena to Julian at a charity gala eighteen months prior. Marcus had handled Arthur’s burial arrangements and had personally appointed the legal team overseeing Leo’s inheritance.
""Julian,"" Clara said softly, her voice cutting through the ringing in his ears. ""Look at Leo.""
Julian rushed to the boy's side. The child's chest was barely moving, each breath a ragged, shallow rattle against the plastic edges of the mask. The paramedic looked up, his expression grim. ""His blood pressure is crashing. We need to get him to St. Jude’s pediatric intensive care immediately, but without knowing the specific neurotoxin, we’re treating blind. We need the clinical records from the Vance Foundation’s private research facility.""
""Marcus controls that facility,"" Julian said, the fury inside him hardening into cold resolve. ""He shut down public access three weeks ago under the guise of corporate restructuring.""
""Then we take the hospital's trauma transport,"" Clara said, stepping forward with unexpected authority. ""I know the layout of the downtown lab. Arthur took me there once when he was updating his insurance policies. The master database isn't networked—it's kept on an isolated terminal in the lower basement to avoid corporate espionage.""
Julian looked at the maid, seeing for the first time the sharp, calculating intellect behind her quiet demeanour. ""You were never just a nanny, were you, Clara?""
May you like
Clara met his eyes without flinching. ""Arthur hired me through an elite private security agency after his wife died. He knew his family was closing in on him. My assignment was to keep Leo alive until his first birthday, when the irrevocable trust activates.""
Before Julian could answer, the mansion’s power grid hummed and abruptly died, plunging the entire estate into suffocating, total darkness.
