Chapter 12 - The Architect's Will

By midday, the third-floor conference room of the Vance Maritime corporate tower overlooked a rain-swept metropolis that seemed entirely indifferent to the empire that had nearly collapsed beneath its foundations. Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass, dressed in a fresh dark suit, watching the endless stream of traffic forty stories below. Behind him, three senior partners of the firm sat in stunned silence alongside the primary executor of Arthur Vance’s final testament.
Leo slept peacefully in a portable bassinet in the corner, his color fully restored, guarded by two private security personnel Clara had personally vetted. Clara herself sat at the head of the conference table, her maid’s uniform replaced by a tailored charcoal suit, her dark hair pulled back in a sharp, professional braid.
""The board has reviewed the forensic analysis of the offshore accounts,"" the lead attorney stated, sliding a thick leather-bound dossier toward Julian. ""Marcus had siphoned upwards of eighty million dollars over the past four fiscal quarters. Elena was promised twenty percent upon the successful transfer of Leo’s legal guardianship to Marcus’s shell corporation.""
Julian turned around, his eyes cold and hollow. ""What about Arthur's original directives?""
The attorney opened the sealed envelope recovered from the St. Jude vault. ""Arthur’s final will is unequivocal, Mr. Vance. The entirety of his voting shares—fifty-one percent of Vance Maritime—does not pass to you. Nor did it ever pass to Marcus.""
The board members shifted uncomfortably in their leather chairs.
""Arthur knew the family would tear itself apart to control the child’s inheritance,"" the attorney continued, looking directly at Clara. ""Therefore, the voting shares and the executive trusteeship were placed under the sole authority of an independent corporate guardian until Leo reaches the age of twenty-five.""
The attorney turned the final page of the document, pointing to the designated signature at the bottom.
""Arthur designated Clara Ross as the primary trustee and legal custodian of the Vance estate. She holds the sole authority to confirm or dismiss the executive board, including the position of Chief Executive Officer.""

Julian stared at Clara, the room falling into absolute stillness. The board members looked between the former housemaid and the remaining Vance heir, waiting for the explosive confrontation that would inevitably follow such a revelation.
Clara did not flinch. She met Julian’s gaze with the same unyielding composure she had shown while staring down Marcus’s weapon in the sub-basement. ""Julian,"" she said calmly, her voice carrying absolute weight. ""Sit down. We have a company to dismantle.""
