Chapter 11 - The Pulse of Dawn

The silence that followed the monitor’s continuous tone was more suffocating than the air in the sealed vault. Julian dropped to his knees beside the examination table, his forehead resting against the cold steel, his hand covering Leo’s tiny, unmoving fingers. Marcus let out a low, ragged chuckle from the corner where two guards pinned him against the wall.
""Too late, Julian,"" Marcus whispered through split lips. ""The neural pathways have already degraded. You saved a corpse.""
""Shut his mouth,"" Clara said, her voice chilling the room.
She did not look up. She discarded the empty autoinjector and immediately began pediatric chest compressions, using two fingers over the center of Leo’s tiny chest. One, two, three, four. She leaned down, delivering a gentle puff of air into the boy’s mouth, then resumed the rhythmic compressions with mechanical precision.
""Come on, Leo,"" Clara whispered, her face inches from the child’s. ""Your father didn't die so you could quit now. Breathe.""
One, two, three, four.
Julian raised his head, watching the timer on the wall console. Two minutes had passed since the injection. Outside the vault doors, the distant sound of metropolitan police sirens reverberated through the concrete floors, signaling the arrival of state authorities.
Suddenly, Leo’s tiny chest spasmed. A violent, choking cough tore through the infant’s throat, expelling a clear fluid onto the steel table. The continuous flatline tone broke, replaced by a jagged, rapid series of rhythmic beeps that stabilized into a steady sixty beats per minute. The baby drew in a deep, ragged gasp of air and let out a furious, indignant wail that echoed throughout the vast underground chamber.
Julian let out a broken sob, catching the child’s flailing hand in his own. Leo’s fingers curled tightly around Julian’s thumb, his grip surprisingly strong, warm blood rushing back into his pale skin.
""He's back,"" Clara breathed, tears finally spilling past her lashes as she collapsed against the edge of the table, spent and exhausted. ""The neurotoxin is neutralizing.""
The heavy vault doors swung fully open. A dozen federal agents poured into the room, their weapons drawn, led by Assistant Director Hall of the Federal Investigation Bureau. Hall assessed the scene in seconds: the bound corporate executive, the injured child, and the corporate records scattered across the console.
""Marcus Vance,"" Hall announced, stepping forward with a warrant in hand. ""You are under arrest for conspiracy, corporate espionage, and the attempted murder of Leo Vance.""
May you like
Marcus sneered, tilting his chin up with arrogant defiance. ""You have nothing that ties me directly to the dosage. Elena administered it. Elena signed the procurement orders. And Elena is at the bottom of the lake.""
Hall looked down at Marcus with cold contempt. ""We pulled her from the water twenty minutes ago, Marcus. She’s in the trauma ward under federal custody. And she started talking before they even dried her off.""
