Chapter 5 - The Submerged Vault

Julian threw himself onto the wooden planks, his outstretched hand catching only the frigid splash of lake water as Elena plunged beneath the black surface. The cold struck him like a physical blow when he leaned over, peering into the swirling gloom where bubbles rose from her descent. Without hesitating, Julian stripped off his jacket and dived headfirst into the freezing depths.

The lake was pitch-black, weeds grasping at his limbs like skeletal fingers. He forced his eyes open against the sting of the murky water, kicking furiously downward toward the faint gleam of the silver case sinking into the silt. His fingers brushed the plastic rim, slipped, and then locked around the handle just as his lungs screamed for air. Above him, the distorted glare of tactical flashlights swept across the water’s surface as the police perimeter team arrived at the dock.

Julian kicked toward the surface, breaking into the freezing night air with a ragged gasp. Hands reached down, hauling him onto the rough wood of the pier.

""Sir! Where is she?"" an officer shouted, scanning the dark water with a high-powered beam.

Julian coughed up dark water, collapsing on his knees while clutching the waterproof case against his chest. He looked back at the swirling lake; there was no sign of Elena, only a torn strip of royal-blue silk caught on the rusted iron pilings beneath the slipway. ""She went under... call the dive team. But get this case to Clara. Now! The antidote is inside!""

One of the officers grabbed the case, sprinting toward the mansion where the paramedics had already pulled up to the main portico. Julian dragged himself to his feet, shivering violently as the biting wind tore through his soaked shirt. He stumbled back along the gravel path toward the house, his mind locked on his nephew's failing pulse.

When he burst back into the grand foyer, the scene had dissolved into clinical chaos. Parameds knelt around the velvet sofa where Leo lay motionless, a small oxygen mask strapped over his tiny face. Clara stood beside them, holding an IV bag with steady, white-knuckled precision, her face pale but resolute.

The officer slammed the waterproof case onto the marble table. ""This is what she was carrying!""

The head paramedic snapped the latches open, but the sigh of relief that filled the room vanished instantly. Inside the case lay no medical supplies, no vials, and no syringes.

There were only three forged passports, a stack of bearer bonds, and a digital audio recorder that began blinking with a pre-recorded message the moment the lid clicked open.
