Chapter 4 - Shadows at the Perimeter

The northern grounds of the Vance estate stretched over five acres of dense, mist-shrouded pine woods. Julian ran out through the broken glass of the terrace doors, his dress shoes slipping on the wet grass, ignoring the shouting officers who were calling for backup. Behind him, the siren of an advanced life-support ambulance was already wailing in the distance, tearing through the quiet private road that led up the mountain. He knew Clara was with Leo, fighting to keep the child conscious, but the rage that burned in his veins demanded retribution.
Ahead of him, Elena’s blue dress flickered between the dark trunks of the trees like an apparition. She had discarded her high heels near the fountain, running with desperate, feral agility. She was heading toward the old boat house on the edge of the private lake, where the family maintained a direct channel out to the public waterways.
""Stop!"" Julian roared, his lungs burning in the biting cold air. ""Elena! You will not leave this property alive if that child dies!""
Elena reached the wooden dock, panting heavily, her bare feet bleeding from gravel and sharp pine needles. She turned, backed against the railing of the pier, clutching a small waterproof case against her ribs. The moonlight broke through the shifting clouds, illuminating the wild, desperate grin stretching across her pale face.
""You think this began with me, Julian?"" she shouted over the wind. ""Arthur didn't write that letter to save his son! He wrote it to save himself from the debts he owed my family! Your beloved brother was a fraud who gambled away half your family's shipping lines before he died!""
Julian stopped ten paces away, his breath hitching as he stared at the woman he had loved for three years. ""You poisoned a six-month-old child. You tried to cripple my brother’s heir.""
""I took collateral!"" Elena screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria. ""The trust was supposed to be mine! My father poured millions into your failing firm, and Arthur promised me total control over the offshore holdings! Then he had that bastard child with a surrogate and tried to cut us out completely!""
She took another step backward, her foot hovering over the dark, freezing water of the lake. From the distance, the sirens of three additional police cruisers echoed through the valley, accompanied by the barking of search dogs being released at the estate gates.

Elena looked down at the waterproof case in her hands, then up at Julian. ""You think you can save him? The doctor who provided that compound left the country two hours ago. Without the specific antidote from his clinic, that boy’s organs will shut down by midnight.""
She didn't run toward the boat. Instead, she hurled the case into the black water and leapt backward off the pier.
