Chapter 3 - Poison in the Nursery

The master bedroom was bathed in the dim amber glow of the bedside lamps, cast across an expanse of silk and broken crystal. Julian stood before the concealed wall safe behind the portrait of his father, the heavy steel door hanging ajar. Clara stood two paces behind him, her hands trembling as she held Leo wrapped tightly against her shoulder. Inside the empty cavity of the safe lay nothing but a single, shattered vial of amber liquid, its remnants soaking into an envelope addressed directly to Julian.
Julian reached into the dark space with gloved fingers, retrieving the envelope. The paper was stiff, damp with the foul-smelling chemical that had destroyed half the seal. He carefully unfolded the sheet inside, his eyes tracing the hurried, familiar scrawl of his late brother, Arthur.
Julian, the letter read, if you are reading this from the wall safe, it means Elena has moved forward with the transfer. Do not drink anything she serves Leo. The formula Clara prepares is safe, but the canisters delivered from the private pharmacy are tainted with slow-acting neurotoxins. She never wanted custody to honor my memory. She wanted Leo incapacitated so the family trust would default entirely to her through your marriage.
Julian felt the room tilt beneath his feet. He remembered every time Leo had fallen mysteriously ill over the past four months—the sudden fevers, the lethargy that the private pediatrician had dismissed as routine childhood ear infections. That pediatrician had been recommended directly by Elena’s family.
""Clara,"" Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. ""Where did the tins of infant formula come from yesterday?""
Clara felt a cold drop of sweat slide down her neck. ""She told me she imported a special European brand. She insisted I only use the tins from the blue cabinet. She said... she said the local brands caused colic."" Clara gasped, stepping backward. ""My God, Mr. Vance. I gave him a bottle this morning at sunrise. Right before she grabbed him.""
Julian whirled around, his eyes wild as he stared at his nephew. The child was silent now, but it wasn't the peaceful slumber of a satisfied baby; Leo's skin had taken on a grayish tint, and his small forehead was burning to the touch. The boy didn't even flinch when Julian gently tapped his cheek.
""Call Dr. Mercer,"" Julian shouted, lunging toward his desk phone. ""Not the clinic Elena uses—call Mercer at the trauma center now!""

Clara grabbed the receiver, dialing the emergency line with shaking hands. But down the grand staircase, the abrupt sound of screaming pierced the mansion's silence. The officer guarding the study stumbled backward into the entrance hall, clutching a bloody gash across his face, his firearm knocked skittering across the floorboards.
Elena bolted into the shadows of the lower corridor, a shadow moving swiftly toward the rear service exit.
