Chapter 2 - The Key in the Dust

The heavy mahogany doors of the study clicked shut, locking Elena in with two armed guards whose stoic expressions offered no sympathy for her frantic protests. Out in the great hall, the silence returned, thick and suffocating. Clara remained on the floor, her fingers brushing the cold edges of the titanium key card that had fallen from Elena’s designer dress. Etched across its face was a single embossed crest: the private vault emblem of the St. Jude Depository, an exclusive facility that only accepted unlisted wealth.
Julian settled the infant onto the velvet settee, draping a warm cashmere throw over the shivering child. Leo’s wails had softened to hitching hiccups, his thumb wedged securely into his mouth as exhaustion overtook terror. When Julian turned around, the lines carved into his face showed every hour of the sleepless months he had spent managing his late brother’s estate while trying to maintain the fiction of a peaceful home.
""Did she hurt you, Clara?"" Julian asked, his voice rough. He extended a hand, offering to help her up from the cold stones.
Clara hesitated, then placed her palm in his. His grip was firm and steady, a stark contrast to the venomous volatility that had ruled the Vance mansion since Julian’s marriage to Elena. ""I'm fine, sir. But Leo... she's been locking his nursery door from the outside at night. I didn't say anything because she told me you would fire me and make sure I never found work in this city again.""
Julian closed his eyes, an expression of bitter remorse washing over his features. ""I should have seen it. When Arthur died and left Leo in my custody, Elena swore she wanted to raise him as our own. I let my grief blind me to who she truly was.""
""It wasn't grief, Mr. Vance,"" Clara whispered, picking up the small card from the floor and holding it up between them. ""It was leverage. She dropped this when they seized her. It doesn't belong to the household accounts. Arthur gave me a copy of his last will before he passed, but it vanished the night he was hospitalized. He told me to look for a safe deposit box under his mother's maiden name.""
Julian stared down at the card. The serial number stamped on the reverse ended with the digits corresponding to his mother's birthdate. Arthur had kept secrets, but none that would necessitate hiding documents from his own brother—unless those documents revealed a betrayal that Julian had unknowingly funded.

Before Julian could take the key, the library doors flew open. Elena broke past the first officer, her hair disheveled, her dark eyes burning with manic fury. ""You think you've won, Clara? Check the security feeds from three o'clock! Check them before you open your mouth!""
Julian lunged forward to shield Clara, but Elena wasn't looking at him. She was laughing, a high, piercing sound that set the baby screaming once more. ""Look at the safe in the master bedroom, Julian! Tell me who the real thief is when you see what she took!""
