Chapter 10 - Shadows in the Rain

Winter arrived with biting winds and torrential rains. Stripped of her social standing and facing federal investigations for financial fraud, Victoria Van Allen spiraled into bitter obsession.
One gray Tuesday, Clara left the prenatal clinic under the watchful eye of Julian’s trusted personal guard, Marcus. As they walked toward the car, a black sedan lurched onto the curb, blocking their path. Victoria stepped out into the pouring rain, her designer coat soaked, her eyes wild with unhinged malice.
“You ruined my life!” Victoria screamed, stepping toward Clara with a heavy brass clutch raised in her fist. “You took everything that belonged to me!”
Before Victoria could take another step, Marcus moved, but it was Julian—who had been waiting in the car—who stepped between them like an unbreakable wall. He caught Victoria’s arm mid-air with effortless strength.

“Look at yourself, Victoria,” Julian said, his voice cutting through the storm. “Clara took nothing from you. You destroyed yourself with your own greed. If you ever come within a hundred yards of her again, I will not call the police. I will ensure every creditor you owe calls in their debts by nightfall.”
Victoria collapsed to her knees in the rain, weeping bitter, helpless tears. Julian turned his back on her completely, wrapping his long overcoat around Clara, sheltering her from the rain as he guided her safely into the warmth of the car.
