Chapter 4 - Cold Whispers in High Society

By midnight, Doctor Evans confirmed the baby was safe, though Clara suffered from exhaustion and mild bruising. Julian sat in an armchair beside her bed, refusing to leave even as the grandfather clock chimed three in the morning.
Downstairs in the grand parlor, Eleanor Sterling paced back and forth, her diamond rings catching the firelight as Victoria wept theatrical tears of outrage.
“He humiliated me, Eleanor!” Victoria cried, dabbing at dry eyes. “In front of the kitchen staff! Over a girl who cleans his silver! How does our merger survive this?”
Eleanor’s face was a mask of aristocratic disdain. “Julian is acting out of foolish guilt. Men of his status often mistake sentiment for duty. Tomorrow morning, the board convenes. If Julian chooses an orphan over the Van Allen conglomerate, he will find his chairmanship stripped before sunset.”
“And the girl?” Victoria asked, a venomous smile returning to her lips.

“The girl will be handled quietly,” Eleanor said, her voice devoid of human warmth. “A generous check, an NDA, and a one-way ticket across the Atlantic. If she refuses, the Sterling legal machine will ensure she never holds that child.”
Unbeknownst to both women, Julian stood outside the parlor doors, listening in the shadows. He didn’t feel anger; he felt a profound, liberating clarity. The chains of family prestige that had bound his soul for thirty-two years had finally snapped.
