Chapter 12 - A Mother's Reckoning

Three weeks before Clara’s due date, an unexpected visitor arrived at the manor. Eleanor Sterling stepped into the parlor, leaning heavily on an ivory cane. She looked smaller, aged by isolation and the bitter silence of her empty mansion.
Julian stepped forward, protective instincts immediately flaring, but Clara gently touched his arm, asking him to give them a moment alone.
Eleanor sat stiffly on the edge of the sofa, looking at Clara’s serene face, baffled by the lack of malice in the younger woman’s eyes.
“You have every reason to banish me from this house,” Eleanor said, her voice brittle. “I tried to destroy you.”
Clara poured a cup of herbal tea and placed it gently in front of the older woman. “You tried to protect what you thought was important, Mrs. Sterling. But power without kindness is just an expensive cage. I don’t want your money, and I don’t hold hatred in my heart. Hatred is too heavy to carry into motherhood.”

Eleanor stared at the steaming cup, a crack appearing in her impenetrable facade. A single tear slipped down her weathered cheek. “My son has smiled more in the last three months than he did in thirty years. You gave him what I never could.”
When Eleanor left that day, she did not leave as a conqueror, but as an old woman who had finally begun the long, humble journey toward redemption.
