Chapter 5 - A Heart Behind Tattoos

Dawn broke in pale ribbons of silver over the manicured estate gardens. In the quiet bedroom, Clara stirred, finding Julian sitting by the window, sipping black coffee. The early light illuminated the intricate tattoos on his forearms and neck—ancient Celtic knots and memorial dates for the people he had lost.
“You didn’t sleep,” Clara whispered, trying to sit up.
Julian immediately set his cup down and moved to fluff the pillows behind her back. “I’ve spent too many years sleeping through what truly mattered.”
Clara looked at his hand, resting gently near hers on the duvet. “Your mother will never accept this child, Julian. To them, I am dirt. Your world operates on bloodlines and billions. I only have my dignity.”
Julian took her fragile hand in both of his. His skin was rough, but his touch was reverent. “Dignity is worth more than every acre of this city. My mother and Victoria believe power is buying people’s silence. They don’t know what real strength is. You carried our child through seven months of cruelty without breaking. That makes you stronger than anyone in this house.”

A soft knock interrupted them. It was Mrs. Gable, the elderly head cook who had secretly slipped Clara extra fruit and bread during her darkest weeks. The old woman held a breakfast tray, her eyes wide with relief as she saw Julian guarding Clara’s bedside.
“Come in, Mrs. Gable,” Julian said politely. “From today forward, Clara is served first. In everything.”
