Chapter 2 - Sanctuary Behind Iron Gates

Victoria’s heels clicked sharply in furious retreat, her threats echoing down the vaulted ceiling before drowning in silence. Clara remained pressed against the wall, her breaths shallow and ragged, tears carving tracks through the dust on her cheeks. She flinched as Julian shifted, expecting the facade to crumble, expecting the cold dismissal she had endured for seven long months.
Instead, Julian’s voice softened into something unrecognizable. “Can you stand?”

“My mother does not rule this house tonight,” Julian cut in gently. Without waiting for permission, he slid one arm beneath her shoulders and the other under her knees, lifting her effortlessly against his chest. Clara gasped, instinctively clutching his lapel. She could feel the steady, fierce thrum of his heartbeat beneath his shirt.
He carried her past the grand ballroom doors, past the gaping stares of the footmen, straight into the private east wing—a sanctuary forbidden to all staff. He laid her upon the velvet sofa before a roaring fireplace and knelt again, his thumb brushing a tear from her temple.
“Doctor Evans is on his way,” Julian murmured, removing his suit jacket to drape it over her shivering shoulders. “You will never sleep in the basement quarters again. Neither of you.”

Clara swallowed hard, fear waging war with desperate hope. “Why now? After all these months of silence?”
Julian looked down at his ink-stained hands, guilt darkening his features. “Because I was blind. And because I refuse to let the darkness of my family extinguish the only pure thing left in my life.”
