Chapter 12 - The Confession in the Dark

A chilling silence settled between them, broken only by the rhythmic popping of pine wood in the fireplace.
Arthur Vance stared at Victoria, his warm, grandfatherly persona peeling away like rotten veneer. He leaned back in his leather chair, unbuttoning his cashmere coat, revealing a tailored vest beneath.
""You're smarter than your brother, Victoria,"" Vance said, his voice dropping into a low, menacing rasp. ""I always said you were the one who should have run the Sterling banks. But you're asking questions that aren't healthy for a young woman who wants to live a long, luxurious life.""
""So you did kill him,"" Victoria pressed, her voice steady and ice-cold. ""Thomas Ashford was your best friend.""
""Thomas was a sentimental fool!"" Vance hissed, his fist slamming down onto the armrest. ""He wanted to dissolve the Consortium's offshore shipping routes! He wanted transparency. He wanted to turn Ashford Maritime into a clean, regulated corporation. Do you have any idea how many billions of dollars flow through those unregulated South American channels every year? He was going to destroy forty years of our empire's private profits for a guilty conscience!""
Vance leaned forward, pointing a manicured finger at Victoria. ""I put a pressure-sensitive altitude barometric charge in the auxiliary fuel tank of his jet. The moment he crossed twelve thousand feet over the Andes, the fuel line vaporized. Clean. Untraceable. An act of God.""
Victoria nodded slowly. ""And Julian?""
""Julian was never supposed to survive,"" Vance scoffed. ""He was supposed to rot in that Chilean mountain pass. But he clawed his way out. He came back, playing the dutiful son, pretending to be civilized while hiding a guttersnipe mistress and a bastard in Lisbon. He is his father’s son—weak, sentimental, and dangerous to our bottom line. He had to be excised.""
Vance reached into his briefcase, pulling out a thick set of legal documents. ""Now, sign these proxy voting forms, Victoria. Give me your family’s voting block, and you walk away with fifty million dollars in an offshore trust. Refuse... and you will find out that tragic accidents run in social circles.""
Victoria looked down at the papers, then looked up at Vance with a cold, triumphant smile.
""I won't be signing anything, Arthur.""
Vance’s expression darkened with rage. ""You stupid little girl—""
""Thank you, Arthur,"" a voice spoke from the shadows behind the tall library bookshelves. ""That was everything the United States Department of Justice needed to hear.""
The double oak doors at the back of the drawing room swung open. Julian stepped into the light, accompanied by Clara, who carried a digital audio transmitter connected directly to the federal monitoring van outside. Behind them, five heavily armed FBI agents raised their weapons, red laser dots painting the chest of Arthur Vance’s cashmere coat.
Vance shot to his feet, his face turning an apocalyptic shade of purple. ""What is this?! Ashford, you wouldn't dare!""
""You killed my father,"" Julian said, his voice deathly quiet as he walked toward the man who had pretended to be his mentor. ""You used my mother's paranoia against her. You nearly killed Victoria, and you tried to suffocate my son in a box.""

Julian stopped inches from Vance, his towering frame casting a shadow over the older man.
""Federal prison is too kind for you, Arthur. But I promise you, you will spend every remaining day of your life watching from a concrete cell as my wife, my son, and I rebuild this company without a single drop of your tainted blood.""
