Chapter 6 - The Glass Fortress

The north gardens were bathed in freezing autumn fog. Julian sprinted across the dew-soaked lawn, Clara matching his stride despite her restrictive servant’s skirt and worn leather shoes. Behind them, the mansion’s exterior floodlights suddenly cut out, plunging the estate grounds into pitch blackness.

""They've killed the main grid,"" Julian said, his voice dropping into a combat whisper. He checked the magazine of Victoria’s small revolver. Five rounds of .38 caliber hollow points. ""Stay behind me. The greenhouse has three entrances, but only the central pavilion has structural support for a heavy crate.""

""Julian, how did they get him past the perimeter guards?"" Clara asked, her breath misting in the cold air. ""Your mother has thirty private security contractors on this estate.""

""They didn't get past them,"" Julian replied bitterly. ""The contractors work for the Ashford board of directors. If the board made a deal with the Consortium, the guards aren't here to protect us. They’re here to ensure the transition of power happens quietly.""

They reached the perimeter of the Victorian glass conservatory. Its iron ribs arched against the night sky, frosted glass panes reflecting the distant city glow. Inside, amid rows of exotic orchids and sprawling palms, a faint, unnatural green light glowed from the center aisle.

Julian reached the side door, testing the latch. Locked from the inside with a magnetic bolt.

""Look,"" Clara pointed through a lower pane.

Sitting on the damp flagstones fifty feet away was an industrial steel container, roughly four feet long, bolted shut with pneumatic clamps. An LED panel on the front displayed a countdown: 08:42.

Standing beside the crate were two men dressed in black tactical fatigues, equipped with silenced submachine guns. Between them stood a man in an expensive gray three-piece suit, casually checking his gold pocket watch.

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat.

""Marcus,"" Julian muttered under his breath.

""Who is Marcus?"" Clara whispered, clutching his arm.

""Marcus Sterling,"" Julian answered, feeling a sickening pit open in his stomach. ""Victoria’s older brother. The chief financial officer of Sterling International.""

Clara stared through the glass in disbelief. ""His own sister... he put a bomb on his own sister’s neck?""

""Victoria was collateral,"" Julian said, his eyes darkening with murderous rage. ""Marcus didn't want a merger through marriage. He wanted total liquidation. With Victoria dead and me implicated or dead, the Sterling banks and the Ashford shipping empire fall entirely into his hands.""

Julian calculated the distance. Fifty feet of open greenhouse aisle. Two armed mercenaries with automatic weapons. One civilian target holding the remote detonator. And eight minutes before the boy in the box suffocated.

""Clara,"" Julian whispered, handing her the empty champagne cork he had grabbed from the foyer. ""You need to break the glass on the far eastern wing. Draw their fire for three seconds. The moment they turn, I go in.""

Clara took the heavy brass fragment he placed in her palm. Her eyes were terrified, but she nodded firmly. ""Bring our son back.""

She slipped into the darkness of the garden bushes.

Julian waited, muscles coiled like a strike spring, watching the glowing red numbers on the steel crate tick down to 07:59.
