Chapter 4 - The Choker of Shadows

Every eye in the foyer locked onto Victoria.

Victoria instinctively touched her throat. Beneath the dazzling chandelier, she wore an exquisite diamond-and-sapphire choker—a traditional wedding gift presented to her by Eleanor Ashford just an hour before the ceremony. It was a historic piece, once owned by a Russian grand duchess, heavy and freezing against her bare collarbones.

""What... what is on my neck?"" Victoria stammered, backing away from Julian. Her hands scrambled frantically at the ornate platinum clasp behind her neck. ""Julian, take it off! Take it off me!""

""Don't move, Victoria!"" Julian shouted, raising both hands to halt her.

He moved forward with slow, calculating precision, his gaze locked on the underside of the sapphire setting. Embedded within the filigree of platinum was a tiny, pulsing red diode, no larger than a grain of sand. A nearly imperceptible hairline wire ran along the inner band against her jugular.

""Eleanor,"" Julian growled, not turning his head. ""What did you put on her?""

Eleanor Ashford had gone completely pale. The haughty matriarch took an involuntary step back, clutching her own pearl necklace. ""I... I did not do that. That choker came from the vault in Zurich this morning. My security courier delivered it personally.""

""Your courier was compromised,"" the burner phone spoke again from Clara’s trembling hands. The robotic voice was chillingly devoid of emotion. ""A miniature pressurized thermite charge. Tamper with the clasp, and it severs the carotid artery with three thousand degrees of heat. Run outside the estate perimeter, and the signal detonates.""

Victoria began to hyperventilate. ""Julian! Help me! Please, God, Julian!""

""I'm right here,"" Julian said, his voice dropping into the steady, combat-trained cadence he had acquired during the years he spent wandering the globe before claiming his title. ""Don't swallow hard. Keep your chin up. I won't let it hurt you.""

Clara watched Victoria with wide, horrified eyes. Despite the betrayal, despite the bitter rivalry of their circumstances, Clara saw only another victim in the crosshairs. ""Why are you doing this?"" Clara yelled into the phone. ""Where is my baby? Where is Leo?!""

""The boy is safe in the greenhouse on the north wing of this very estate,"" the caller answered. ""He has twenty minutes of oxygen remaining in a sealed containment crate. You have two choices, Julian Ashford.""

""Name them,"" Julian said, his jaw locked like granite.

""Sign the Ashford-Sterling dissolution papers sitting on your study desk, transferring all offshore logistics rights to the Consortium... or let the timer run out. If you call the authorities, the choker detonates. If you try to disarm the device, your son’s crate fills with carbon monoxide.""

The line went dead. A sharp beep echoed from Victoria’s neck as the red light began to flash at a steady, rhythmic one-second interval.

Victoria looked at Julian through a flood of tears. ""The north wing greenhouse is three hundred yards away. You can't reach him and save me at the same time.""

Julian looked at Victoria, then turned his gaze to Clara, whose breath was coming in ragged sobs. His eyes then shifted to the grand double doors leading to the north grounds.

""Clara,"" Julian said, his voice flat and resolute. ""You know how I used to wire radios in Chile?""

Clara looked at him, confused, then realization dawned in her eyes. ""The magnetic override.""

""Julian, no!"" Victoria screamed. ""If you make a mistake, my head comes off!""

Julian didn't answer. He turned to his mother. ""Mother, give me your hairpins. Now.""
