Chapter 8 - The Price of Breath

The hollow thud echoed off the glass walls.

Marcus Sterling’s eyes rolled back into his head, and he collapsed onto the flagstones like an empty suit, dropping the detonator from his limp hand.

Julian lunged forward, catching the plastic remote before it could strike the stone floor and trigger a misfire. He immediately kicked Marcus’s unconscious body aside and dropped to his knees before the steel container.

02:45.

""Julian! Open it! Open it!"" Clara sobbed, falling beside him, her bloody fingers scratching at the heavy pneumatic seals.

Julian inspected the latch mechanism. It wasn't an explosive lock; it was a hydraulic bypass valve keyed to the remote in his hand. He located the green sync button on the transmitter and pressed it.

With a loud hiss of compressed air, the heavy steel lid popped upward three inches.

Julian threw the lid back. Inside, curled on a thin thermal blanket with an oversized wool sweater, lay an eight-year-old boy. His messy light brown hair was damp with sweat, his pale face resting against his knees.

""Leo!"" Clara cried, lifting the boy into her arms.

The child gasped, taking in the cool, damp greenhouse air, his hazel eyes fluttering open. He blinked against the dim light, coughing weakly, before his small arms wrapped around his mother’s neck.

""Mom...?"" the boy whispered, his voice trembling. ""The bad men in the van... they said Daddy was dead.""

Julian’s chest seized. He knelt in the dirt and broken glass, looking at the boy’s face. It was like looking into an antique mirror: the exact same stubborn jawline, the same hazel eyes, the small scar over his left brow that Julian had carried since his own childhood.

Julian reached out with a trembling hand, brushing a strand of brown hair from the boy’s forehead.

""I'm not dead, Leo,"" Julian said, his voice choking on unshed tears. ""I'm right here.""

Leo looked from his mother to Julian, then stared at the torn black tuxedo and the blood on Julian’s hands. ""Are you the man from the photograph?""

Julian could only nod, pulling both Clara and their son into his arms, holding them against his chest as if the sheer force of his grip could shield them from the world.

The moment was shattered by the sound of approaching footsteps crunching over glass.

Julian instantly pushed Clara and Leo behind him, retrieving Victoria’s revolver from the ground and spinning toward the entrance.

Stepping through the shattered archway was Victoria Sterling.

Her silver evening gown was torn at the hem, stained with black soot from the foyer explosion, and her hair was completely undone. In her hand, she held an encrypted military tablet, its screen glowing with live operational feeds.

Behind her stood four uniformed officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, their rifles aimed not at Julian, but at the unconscious form of Marcus Sterling.

Victoria looked past Julian, her gaze landing on Clara and the small, trembling boy clutching his mother’s apron.

""The FBI was monitoring Marcus’s offshore accounts,"" Victoria said quietly, her voice devoid of its former arrogance. ""He didn't act alone, Julian. Your mother signed the initial transfer documents twenty minutes ago.""
