Chapter 2 - The Ghost at the Altar

The foyer erupted into a suffocating buzz of muffled whispers. Guests leaned in, diamonds catching the light as scandal rippled through the old-money dynasts of New York. Victoria felt the blood drain from her face, leaving her skin as cold as the marble beneath her heels.
""His... wife?"" Victoria’s lips moved, but the sound was barely audible. She pulled her wrist from Julian’s grip, stepping back as though burned. ""That's absurd. You were never married. Your background was vetted by my family's private investigators. Every single year of your life was accounted for.""
Julian closed his eyes for a fraction of a second. When he opened them, the cold mask of the Ashford family patriarch was entirely gone, replaced by raw, bleeding vulnerability.
""They found what I allowed them to find,"" Julian said.
""Julian, look at me!"" Victoria demanded, her voice cracking as tears threatened to breach her mascara. ""Tell me she is lying. Tell me this is an extortion scheme. Look at the dress she’s wearing! She serves canapés at your charity galas! She mends the drapes in your summer home!""
""Seven years ago,"" Clara interrupted, her voice gaining a haunting, melodic clarity that silenced the front row of guests. ""In a small parish outside of Valparaíso. Before the Ashford family found him. Before he was declared the sole heir to the Ashford shipping empire. He was just a mechanic named Julian Cross.""
Julian reached out, his hand hovering over Clara’s shoulder as if to pull her back, but his arm dropped helplessly to his side. ""Clara, please. The papers were signed. You were supposed to be safe in Lisbon. Why are you here?""
""Because Lisbon wasn't safe,"" Clara said, her eyes fixed on his. ""And because your mother’s men came to my house last Tuesday.""
At the edge of the crowd, an elderly woman with silver hair pulled into a severe chignon stiffened. Eleanor Ashford, Julian’s formidable mother, did not flinch, but her cold gaze fixed upon Clara with lethal precision.
Victoria looked between Julian, Clara, and the matriarch. The pristine world of wealth, legacy, and calculated power she had meticulously built was crumbling in seconds.
""So the wedding is off,"" Victoria stated, her voice hardening into ice. ""The grand merger of the Sterling and Ashford dynasties ends before the first dance.""
""No,"" Eleanor Ashford’s authoritative voice rang out from the rear of the foyer. The matriarch stepped through the parting crowd, her emerald necklace gleaming. ""The wedding will proceed. The press is already outside. Escort this girl to the basement study immediately.""
Two heavy security guards moved instantly toward Clara.
Julian stepped forward, unbuttoning his tuxedo jacket with deliberate, lethal grace. ""Touch her, and neither of you leaves this house breathing.""

The guards halted. The guests gasped.
Clara turned her gaze back to Julian, her chin trembling. ""They didn't just come to Lisbon to scare me, Julian. They took the boy.""
