Chapter 15 - A Vow Upon the Sea

The Chilean sun set in fiery streaks of crimson and gold across the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
The rhythmic crash of waves against the black cliffs below filled the air with salt spray and crisp evening air. Perched on the cliffside was a modest white stucco cottage, its blue wooden shutters thrown open to catch the coastal breeze.
Down on the wooden pier of the small boatyard, the scent of diesel fuel, mahogany shavings, and sea brine mingled together.
Julian, dressed in worn denim jeans and a simple cotton t-shirt, wiped grease from his knuckles with an oily rag. He looked up toward the shoreline where Leo was chasing sand crabs along the wet sand, his joyful laughter carrying over the surf.
Footsteps sounded on the wooden planks of the pier. Clara walked toward him, barefoot, holding two glasses of local red wine. The wind whipped her dark hair across her face, but her smile was luminous.
""Dinner is in twenty minutes, Mr. Cross,"" she said, using the simple surname he had worn when they first met in this very town.
Julian set down his wrench, stepping forward to take the glass from her hand. He set it on the workbench, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her gently against his chest.
""You called me Mr. Cross,"" Julian murmured, his eyes lingering on her lips. ""I haven't heard that name in eight years.""
""Julian Ashford was an empire,"" Clara said, resting her hands against his chest, feeling the steady, unbroken beat of his heart. ""Julian Cross is the man who built this pier. The man who taught our son how to swim yesterday.""
Julian reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, simple ring—not the five-carat diamond he had been forced to give Victoria under the glare of ballroom chandeliers, but a plain, elegant band carved from polished whalebone and local silver, crafted with his own hands in the boatyard workshop.
Clara’s breath caught. Her eyes filled with warm, happy tears as she looked from the ring to his eyes.
""No chandeliers,"" Julian whispered, taking her left hand in his. ""No contracts. No board of directors. No lies. Just you, me, and our son, under the open sky.""
He slid the band onto her finger. It fit perfectly.
""Will you marry me, Clara?""
Clara threw her arms around his neck, pulling him down into a deep, desperate kiss that tasted of salt, wine, and ten years of reclaimed dreams.
""Yes,"" she breathed against his lips. ""A thousand times, yes.""
Down on the sand, Leo stopped running and looked up toward the pier. The boy waved both arms toward his parents, the carved wooden sailboat tucked safely under his elbow, his silhouette framed against the dying gold of the sunset.

Julian held Clara close, his eyes drifting out toward the endless, tranquil horizon of the ocean.
The gilded chains of the Ashford name were broken, buried forever in the ashes of the world they had left behind. For the first time in his life, Julian Cross was a truly wealthy man."
