Chapter 7 - Shattered Glass and Gunfire

A deafening crash echoed from the far eastern wing as Clara hurled the heavy brass fragment through the reinforced glass. Shards rained down upon the concrete path, the sound amplifying within the cavernous greenhouse.

""East perimeter! Move!"" Marcus Sterling barked, snapping his head toward the noise.

Both tactical mercenaries pivoted instantly, raising their submachine guns and spraying a controlled burst of suppressed fire into the foliage outside the eastern pane. Glass exploded outward in crystalline sheets.

In that three-second window, Julian kicked through the side entrance door.

The heavy wooden frame splintered under his combat boot. Julian lunged into the central aisle, closing the gap before the mercenaries could reacquire their targets. He leveled Victoria’s small revolver and fired twice.

The first shot caught the left mercenary in the shoulder, spinning him backward into a display of terracotta pots. The second mercenary swung his weapon around, but Julian closed the distance, slapping the barrel aside with his left forearm as the gun fired, shattering an overhead glass arch.

Julian drove his elbow into the mercenary’s throat, sweeping his legs out from under him. The man hit the stone floor hard, his weapon skittering away under a bench of fern foliage. Julian brought the butt of the revolver down with clinical precision, rendering the guard unconscious.

Marcus Sterling stumbled backward against the industrial steel crate, his face pale under the eerie green glow of the timer. He fumbled inside his jacket, pulling out a sleek black detonator with a thumb resting over a recessed switch.

""Stay back, Ashford!"" Marcus screamed, his voice wavering between panic and venom. ""One twitch and I trigger the secondary purge! The boy’s crate floods with nitrogen gas instantly!""

Julian halted ten feet away. His tuxedo was torn at the shoulder, covered in white plaster dust and glass fragments. His gun remained leveled at Marcus’s forehead.

""You tried to decapitate your own sister, Marcus,"" Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. ""Do you really think you're walking out of this greenhouse alive?""

""Victoria was always weak,"" Marcus spat, sweat dripping into his eyes. ""She dreamed of society balls and high-class charity dinners. She didn't have the stomach for the debt our family is carrying. The Consortium offered to erase five hundred million in bad loans if I delivered the Ashford maritime fleet to their control.""

""And an eight-year-old child was the price?""

""He was the leverage!"" Marcus yelled, his thumb trembling against the switch. 04:15 flashed on the crate’s digital display. ""Drop the gun, Julian! Drop it, or I press it right now!""

From the shadows behind the steel crate, a silhouette rose silently.

Clara had slipped through the broken eastern entrance, her bare hands bleeding from sharp glass shards, clutching a heavy iron garden shears she had pulled from a maintenance rack.

Julian caught her eye across the mist-filled room. He did not blink.

""You're right, Marcus,"" Julian said, slowly lowering the barrel of his revolver toward the floor. ""You hold all the cards.""

Marcus smiled, a hideous, triumphant sneer. ""Kick it over. Now.""

Behind him, Clara brought the heavy iron shears down with both hands across the back of Marcus Sterling’s skull.
