Chapter 3 - The Bloodline Debt

The word hung in the air like a detonation.
Julian’s face went completely slack. The legendary composure of the young CEO, the man who had bought out five hostile takeovers without blinking, vanished. He reached out and grabbed Clara by both shoulders, heedless of the cameras, the guests, and his furious bride.
""What did you say?"" Julian’s voice was a ragged growl. ""Where is Leo?""
""Who is Leo?"" Victoria screamed, the decorum finally shattering. She lunged forward, grabbing Julian’s lapel. ""Julian! Who is Leo?!""
Julian didn't look at her. His entire universe had contracted into the terrified brown eyes of the woman in the maid’s uniform.
""They took him three nights ago,"" Clara wept, her tears falling freely onto Julian’s black lapels. ""A black van outside his school. The driver left an envelope on the doorstep. It had your family crest on the wax seal, Julian. They told me if I didn't appear here tonight, if I didn't force you to sign the trust handover before midnight, I would never see our son again.""
Victoria let go of Julian as if struck by lightning. ""Our son... You have a child.""
Julian turned slowly toward his mother. Eleanor Ashford remained standing near the grand staircase, her expression unreadable, her hands folded serenely over her beaded purse.
""Mother,"" Julian whispered. The name sounded like an execution order.
""Do not make a scene in front of your peers, Julian,"" Eleanor said smoothly, though a flicker of unease crossed her eyes. ""Think of the stock prices on Monday. Think of the Sterling alliance. Whatever private drama you left behind in South America was meant to stay buried.""
""You kidnapped my son,"" Julian said, taking a step toward his mother. His hands curled into tight fists at his sides.
""I secured the family line,"" Eleanor replied, her voice dropping into a razor-thin hiss that only those in the inner circle could hear. ""A bastard born in a gutter cannot threaten the Ashford inheritance. Victoria is your future. Her family's banks are your lifeline.""
Victoria stood between them, trembling with rage, humiliated beyond measure. She turned to the crowd of onlookers, whose smartphones were discreetly recording from pocket angles.
""Get out,"" Victoria shouted at the guests. ""All of you, get the hell out of this house!""
The guests hurried toward the heavy oak doors, eager to escape the epicenter of an imperial scandal while desperately texting their media contacts. Within moments, the grand hall was empty of strangers, leaving only the five people caught in the web: Julian, Victoria, Clara, Eleanor, and the armed guards.
Julian turned back to Clara. ""Where is the envelope?""
Clara reached deep into the pocket of her apron. But instead of an envelope, she pulled out a burner phone that suddenly vibrated violently against her palm.
The caller ID displayed no number, only a single word: OBSERVER.

Clara’s eyes filled with dread as the phone rang in the quiet hall. Julian reached over and pressed the speaker button.
A distorted, mechanical voice filled the foyer: ""Julian Ashford. Look at your bride’s neck before you choose which family dies tonight.""
