Chapter 9 - The Sterling Reckoning

The morning sun broke over the Ashford estate in cold, unforgiving shades of gray. Red and blue emergency lights swept across the limestone facade, reflecting off the shattered remains of what was supposed to have been the wedding of the decade.

Federal agents moved through the corridors, carrying out cardboard boxes filled with encrypted hard drives, company ledgers, and offshore banking documents.

In the grand foyer, Eleanor Ashford sat in a straight-backed velvet armchair, her hands cuffed behind her. Even in defeat, her chin remained lifted, her expression stony as an agent read her rights under federal racketeering and conspiracy statutes.

Julian stood by the terrace doors, watching the proceedings. His torn tuxedo jacket had been discarded, leaving him in a soot-stained dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms.

Footsteps approached. Victoria walked up beside him, holding two cups of black coffee from the estate kitchen. She handed one to Julian without looking at him.

""Thank you,"" Julian murmured, taking the cup.

Victoria stared out across the manicured gardens where Clara and Leo were sitting on a stone bench, wrapped in warm wool blankets, surrounded by two protective agents. Leo was drinking hot cocoa, looking up at the sky with wide, innocent eyes.

""He looks like you,"" Victoria said flatly.

""He does,"" Julian admitted.

""You should have told me, Julian. Five years ago, when your mother bought out my family's debts and proposed this alliance... you should have told me there was a woman and a child.""

Julian stared down into the black liquid of his coffee. ""My mother threatened to have Clara deported to a black site in South America if I ever spoke their names. She made it clear: if I became the CEO and married you, Clara and Leo would receive a secret trust fund in Portugal that would guarantee their safety forever. I believed her. I thought I was buying their lives with my own.""

Victoria let out a bitter, self-deprecating laugh. ""And all the while, my brother was working with your mother to turn this wedding into a corporate execution. We were both just pawns in their board meeting, weren't we?""

""Marcus is going to prison for twenty-five years to life,"" Julian said, looking directly at her. ""And my mother will die in a federal correctional facility. The Sterling-Ashford merger is dead, Victoria. You don't owe me anything. You can take your family’s remaining shares and leave.""

Victoria turned to face him, her blue eyes sharp and calculating once more, though stripped of their former cruelty.

""My family's remaining shares are practically worthless now, Julian,"" she said, leaning in slightly. ""The Sterling name is disgraced. But the Consortium didn't just target you. They targeted my father's holdings. Marcus was just the courier.""

May you like

Julian frowned. ""What are you saying?""

Victoria tapped the encrypted tablet tucked under her arm. ""I decoded Marcus’s private correspondence. The Consortium isn't an external syndicate. The person funding the offshore accounts, the person who hired the mercenaries... is someone sitting on your board of directors. Someone who is arriving at this house in exactly ten minutes.""
