Chapter 11 - The Serpent's Podium

The grand press auditorium on the second floor of the federal courthouse was packed with over sixty journalists, their cameras clicking in a relentless rhythm.

Evelyn Vance stood at the podium beneath the Great Seal of the United States. She was a masterclass in calculated grief: dressed in an understated black designer suit, her eyes painted with subtle exhaustion, her hands trembling delicately as she arranged her prepared statement.

Flanking her were three high-ranking attorneys from the Vance Syndicate and two federal marshals whose campaign funds were deeply tied to the Vance family’s offshore subsidiaries.

""Thank you all for coming,"" Evelyn began, her voice soft, projecting a heartbreaking blend of sorrow and maternal duty. ""As many of you know, our beloved Ethan Sterling has suffered an insurmountable mental decline following the tragic loss of his father, Julian. Despite our family’s exhaustive medical efforts, Ethan became violent last night, succumbing to paranoid delusions orchestrated by an unlicensed private nurse.""

She paused, lifting a delicate lace handkerchief to the corner of her eye. Camera shutters clattered like locusts.

""It breaks my heart to announce that Ethan has fled his medical sanctuary,"" she continued, her tone hardening into a solemn declaration. ""For his own safety, and to protect the vast maritime operations that Julian Sterling built for this great city, the Probate Court has granted emergency full power of attorney to the Vance Foundation. We will recover Ethan, we will heal him, and we will preserve his father’s legacy.""

A senior reporter raised his hand. ""Ms. Vance, what about the rumors that Julian Sterling was compiling an audit of your family's pharmaceutical shipments prior to his death?""

Evelyn offered a sad, patronizing smile. ""Fanciful conspiracy theories, David. Julian loved my father like a brother. There are no audits. There is no conspiracy. There is only a grieving family trying to protect a broken boy.""

""Then you won't mind if the broken boy speaks for himself?""

The voice did not come from the media pit. It boomed over the auditorium's central PA system, deep, clear, and terrifyingly steady.

Evelyn froze, the smile dying on her lips as the color drained instantly from her face.

The heavy walnut double doors at the back of the auditorium swung open with a resounding bang.

Every camera lens in the room whipped around in unison.

Framed in the doorway stood Ethan Sterling. He wore no hospital gown, showed no signs of delirium, and walked forward without the aid of a cane, each deliberate step striking the hardwood floor with absolute authority. Beside him walked Elena, holding Julian Sterling’s black leather ledger high above her head.
