Chapter 15 - The Head of the Hydra

Ethan pulled back slightly, his brow furrowing as he picked up the secure satellite handset. ""Only two people had this frequency. Thomas, and the federal prosecutor.""
""Put it on speaker,"" Elena said, her medical instincts immediately sharpening back into focus.
Ethan pressed the speaker button. A low, distorted voice drifted through the small digital receiver—a voice neither of them had ever heard before. It was refined, calm, and chillingly devoid of emotion.
""A spectacular performance at the federal courthouse, Mr. Sterling. Truly theatrical.""
Ethan’s grip tightened on the phone. ""Who is this? Evelyn’s lawyers have already been disbarred. If this is a threat, the federal marshals are tracing this line.""
A dry, aristocratic chuckle sounded from the speaker.
""The marshals cannot trace a quantum satellite uplink routed through Zurich, young man. And please, do not insult my intelligence by comparing me to that foolish, impatient girl Evelyn. She was an asset, nothing more. A clumsy distribution manager who became drunk on high-society ambitions.""
Elena leaned closer to the microphone, her blood running cold. ""You’re the supplier. The one who funded the Singapore laboratory.""
""Very perceptive, Miss Ramos. Just as your late sister Clara was perceptive. It is always the clever ones who realize too late that the cure is far more profitable than the disease.""
Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. ""Where are you?""
""I am everywhere your father's ships used to sail,"" the voice replied smoothly. ""Evelyn believed she was taking over the Sterling fleet for herself. She didn't realize that your father’s vessels carried thirty metric tons of our secondary compound—a compound that is currently docking at four major ports across the eastern seaboard under new corporate flags.""
Ethan’s breath hitched. ""The manifests in the ledger... they were only half the shipments.""
""Precisely. Julian Sterling was a brilliant man, but he only saw the tip of the spear. You won your public trial, Ethan. You sent a spoiled socialite to a federal cage. But the empire Julian died trying to expose doesn't belong to the Vance family. It belongs to the Consortium.""
A soft chime signaled an incoming file transfer on the satellite handset.
The screen blinked, displaying a live satellite feed of an unmarked container vessel entering New York Harbor under the cover of the morning fog. Painted across the bridge wing was the newly registered insignia of an offshore trust.
""You have twelve hours before the containers clear international customs,"" the voice whispered with chilling amusement. ""You can take your father's wealth, your recovered legs, and your pretty little nurse, and live in quiet, luxurious obscurity... or you can follow the trail into the deep water.""
The call terminated with a sharp electronic click.
The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. The morning sun shining through the window suddenly felt cold, casting long, sharp shadows across the white hospital floor.
Ethan stared at the screen, his jaw hardening into pure, unbreakable iron. He looked down at the carbon-fiber braces resting beside his bed, then up at Elena.
Elena didn't say a word. She simply reached out, picked up the left leg brace, and knelt beside the bed, strapping the rigid frame around his knee with steady, unwavering hands.
""Can you stand?"" she asked softly.
May you like
Ethan swung his legs over the edge of the mattress, locking the braces into position with two sharp clicks. He looked at the satellite image of the ship entering the harbor, his hazel eyes burning with a fierce, dangerous fire.
""I can walk,"" Ethan said, standing straight without a trace of hesitation. ""And we have a ship to hunt."""
