Chapter 14 - The Scars We Choose

The quiet room in Boston General Hospital smelled of fresh rain and eucalyptus flowers.
Ethan lay in a recovery bed, his legs elevated in specialized physical therapy braces. The morning sun poured through the high window, washing over the clean white sheets. Beside him, seated in a comfortable leather armchair with a steaming mug of tea, was Thomas. His arm was suspended in a clean white sling, his face still bruised, but his eyes were peaceful.
""The federal judge signed the permanent injunction an hour ago, Master Ethan,"" Thomas said, setting his mug down. ""Evelyn’s father was arrested boarding a private jet in Miami. The Vance Syndicate’s assets have been frozen globally.""
Ethan smiled faintly, his fingers tracing the rim of a silver pocket watch that had belonged to his father, recovered from the courthouse evidence locker. ""And the estate?""
""The locks have been changed,"" Thomas replied with a small, satisfied smirk. ""The private security guards were dismissed by dawn. The mansion is empty, waiting for your return.""
""I'm never going back to that house, Thomas,"" Ethan said quietly, looking out over the Boston river. ""Too many ghosts in those corridors. We'll sell the land, tear down the walls, and turn the grounds into a public sanctuary.""
The heavy oak door swung open, and Elena walked in, carrying a clipboard and a pair of customized carbon-fiber leg braces. She was wearing simple dark trousers and a soft knit sweater—no scrubs, no combat gear. She looked rested for the first time since Ethan had met her.
""How are the vitals, patient?"" she asked, a rare, genuine smile touching her lips.
Ethan sat up, his hazel eyes bright. ""Doctor says the nerve regeneration is permanent this time. With six months of intense physical therapy, I'll be walking unassisted. No more stimulants, no more wheelchairs.""
Elena set the braces down beside his bed. ""Six months of physical therapy with me is worse than any prison sentence, Ethan. I'm a relentless trainer.""
""I wouldn't trust anyone else to keep me on my feet,"" Ethan replied softly.
Thomas smiled gently, pushed himself up from his chair, and bowed his head. ""I believe I will take a walk down to the cafeteria. The coffee up here lacks character."" He slipped out the door, softly closing it behind him.
Elena sat on the edge of the bed, her practical demeanor softening as she looked at Ethan. ""You did well yesterday. Julian would have been proud of the way you stood on that stage.""
Ethan reached out, gently closing his hand over hers. ""I wouldn't have stood at all if you hadn't caught Evelyn's wrist in that hallway. You risked your life, your career, everything... to pull me out of that hell.""
""I told you,"" Elena whispered, her voice husky with emotion. ""I couldn't save Clara. But I promised myself that the next time I saw that poison destroying someone’s life, I wouldn't stop until the people who made it were broken.""
""And now?"" Ethan asked, holding her gaze. ""The Vances are in prison. Clara’s name is cleared. What do you do now, Elena?""

Elena looked at their joined hands, a quiet warmth spreading through her chest. ""Now... I help you learn how to walk again.""
Ethan leaned forward, his heart hammering against his ribs in a rhythm completely unrelated to poison or fear. But before his lips could reach hers, the encrypted satellite phone resting on the bedside table vibrated violently.
