Chapter 3 - The Sealed Vault

The sparks showering beneath the threshold signaled the swift demise of the mahogany door. Evelyn had no intention of waiting for dawn.

""They'll be inside in three minutes,"" Elena stated, her tone devoid of panic, sharpened into pure operational precision. ""Can you brace your upper body?""

Ethan nodded, gritting his teeth as he pushed himself up using the sturdy headboard. ""The wall safe behind the mahogany portrait of my father. The combination is 11-04-88. Take whatever bearer bonds are inside and leave through the servant fire chute behind the drapery. Save yourself, Elena.""

""I'm not leaving without you, and I'm not taking money,"" Elena snapped, striding toward the towering portrait of Julian Sterling. She swung the heavy gilded frame aside and spun the combination dial. The heavy circular door clicked open with a dull mechanical thunk.

Instead of bonds or gold bars, the safe contained a single, worn leather binder embossed with the crest of the Sterling Maritime Trust, alongside an ancient cassette dictaphone. Elena snatched both, sliding them into her canvas medical satchel.

""What is that?"" she asked, turning to Ethan.

Ethan’s eyes widened slightly in the dim lamplight. ""My father's private ledger. He told me on his deathbed that if I ever suspected foul play, the answers weren't in the legal will—they were in his unredacted logs from the Singapore port acquisitions.""

""The acquisitions Evelyn’s family brokered,"" Elena deduced, cold realization dawning on her.

A deafening crash reverberated through the suite as the deadbolt sheared completely off. The heavy door burst inward, splintering into jagged shards of timber.

Two burly security personnel entered first, batons extended, followed by Evelyn. Her champagne dress was smudged with plaster dust, her perfectly pinned hair fraying at the edges, exposing the raw, unhinged ferocity she usually concealed beneath high-society charm.

""How delightfully heroic,"" Evelyn mocked, drawing a sleek silver pistol from her beaded clutch. ""The devoted nurse and the cripple playing house until the bitter end.""

Elena stood motionless beside the bed, her fingers resting casually near the bedside cardiac monitor. ""Shoot a registered practitioner in a residential estate, Evelyn, and even your father’s crooked judges won't be able to sweep the ballistics under the rug.""

""A tragic home invasion,"" Evelyn sighed theatrical lamentation, aiming the barrel squarely at Elena’s forehead. ""A disgruntled nurse attempts to extort the disabled heir, a struggle ensues, tragic crossfire. The police will weep for your tragic passing, Elena. And Ethan... poor, fragile Ethan will succumb to the grief—and a tragic overdose—within the week.""

Evelyn’s finger tightened on the trigger.

Behind Elena, Ethan’s hand quietly found the cord of the bedside defibrillator unit. With a surge of raw, explosive hatred, he plunged the exposed, live charging paddles directly into the brass base of the ornate floor lamp touching the metal frame of Evelyn's guards' boots.

A blinding flash of electric blue erupted across the floorboards.
