Chapter 12 - The Trial of Public Record

Pandemonium erupted in the press room. Photographers shoved past private security guards, flashbulbs exploding in blinding waves across the auditorium.
""Security! Remove them!"" Evelyn shrieked, dropping her facade of elegance, her voice cracking with hysterical panic. ""He is medically incompetent! He is unstable!""
Two Vance private security operatives lunged down the aisle toward Ethan, reaching for their concealed sidearms.
""Touch him and you violate Title 18 of the Federal Criminal Code!"" Elena’s voice rang out with the crisp authority of a battlefield commander. She swept her coat open, revealing a live digital broadcast terminal strapped to her torso, linked directly to an independent live-stream broadcasting to over two million viewers across three national news networks. ""This feed is transmitting directly to the Department of Justice Inspector General's office. Every face in this room is being archived on federal servers.""
The security guards hesitated, freezing under the glare of dozens of broadcast cameras.
Ethan strode down the center aisle, his eyes fixed on Evelyn. The air grew impossibly thin around the podium. Evelyn backed away, her hands clutching the marble rim of the desk as if trying to anchor herself against an approaching hurricane.
Ethan reached the podium, stepping up onto the dais until he stood towering over her. Up close, he could smell the expensive lavender perfume that had once signaled hours of chemical torment in his bedroom.
""You thought if you paralyzed my body, you could break my mind,"" Ethan said, his voice carrying clearly into the live microphones. ""You thought if you murdered my father, no one would be left to audit the shipping manifests at Pier 42.""
""You're insane... you're hallucinating..."" Evelyn stammered, her eyes darting frantically toward her attorneys, who were already packing their briefcases and backing toward the side exits.
Elena slammed Julian Sterling’s leather ledger directly onto the podium, opening it to the final signed audit. She then pulled the cassette dictaphone from her pocket and pressed play into the microphone.
Julian Sterling’s grave, unmistakable voice filled the massive auditorium:
""...If Ethan is hearing this, I am already gone. Trust no one in the Vance family. The girl, Evelyn... she is ruthless. They are using our shipping containers to move unregulated synthetic neurotoxins... the same neurotoxin she has begun administering to my son to simulate degenerative paralysis...""
A collective gasp rippled through the press corps.
Evelyn lunged forward, her nails clawing toward the tape player. ""Turn it off! Turn it off, you crippled bastard!""
Ethan caught her wrist in mid-air.

The movement was lightning-fast, an exact, chilling mirror of the moment Elena had caught her arm in the mansion hallway twenty-four hours earlier. Ethan held her tightly, not with rage, but with cold, absolute finality.
""The paralysis was temporary, Evelyn,"" Ethan whispered softly, loud enough for the podium mic to catch every word. ""Your prison sentence won't be.""
